Cobalts are pleasant on the road, offer better than average fuel economy, and are better equipped and more refined than most rivals. I'd choose the 4-door over the less practical 2-door, but the main complaint here is either one has a tighter rear seat than the class average. Still, compact car shoppers should give the little Chevy a look.

Some cars we test seem impressive in their first 10 miles, but every mile after that just seems to reveal disappointments (even in costly big-image vehicles). Not this Cobalt LT XFE. For its price, it was a pleasantly appointed, peppy, and fun-to-drive car, especially with an easy and precise manual shift, and this tester came to appreciate the car the more he drove it. Very good fuel economy and a pack of standard comfort and convenience features make an XFE Cobalt a worthy entry on the cost-conscious car buyer¿s shopping list.

I've now had the opportunity to take both a Chevy Cobalt SS turbo and a MazdaSpeed 3 on extended highway trips. Let me go on record right now and say neither car matches the Honda Civic Si for overall polish. Though certainly the underdog, the Cobalt acquits itself quite well against the established Mazda. The Chevy doesn't handle quite as well, nor is it as versatile. It does, however, ride better and is easier to negotiate in traffic. If you're considering the MazdaSpeed, be sure to drive the Cobalt SS as well.
