A thoroughly unremarkable subcompact by any measure, Aveo disappoints for its coarse engine and subpar-for-the-class fuel economy. The latter point is a big reason why people buy these types of vehicles. In its favor, Aveo is reasonably comfortable and has a nicely appointed cabin. If you happen to be at a Chevy dealer looking at the Aveo, skip it and look to the larger Cobalt XFE. It's far more substantial, offers the safety of curtain side airbags, and with the manual transmission, promises better fuel economy.

It isn't until you compare it against the best cars in this class that Aveo seems somewhat outgunned--and even then it depends upon your priorities. Improvements in interior appointments for the tested hatchback make a world of difference, putting it at the top of the subcompact heap in this regard. But it's not as cargo friendly, space efficient, thrifty, solid, or fun-to-drive as a Honda Fit, and lags most other competitors in at least one of those areas. It's certainly not a bad subcompact choice, it's just probably not the best.
