The Escalade Hybrid delivers on its promises of improved fuel economy with little-to-no sacrifice of drivabilty or utility. There's a lot here to like if you need a big, luxury-laden SUV, but the price premium seems a bit ambitious.

Want to pilot a luxo barge without feeling any green guilt? Go Escalade, and go boldly. Our ride came to a fiercely unfrugal $75,000, but no one said being eco-friendly would be cheap. Sadly, the Hybrid loses one of my favorite things about the conventional Escalade, and that's the powerful, snarling 6.2-liter V8. By comparison, the Hybrid is only okay--sufficiently powerful, but nothing more. It all comes down to your conscience: Is living guilt free worth giving up gobs of power and roughly $5000? For a bunch a folks, it probably will be.

I was pleased with the 17.6 mpg I averaged during my time in the Escalade Hybrid, but I found its $74,000 price steep and its in-your-face, ostentatious hybrid badging annoying. Escalade caters to a very small niche market: Those who need premium-brand cachet, an SUV that seats seven, and a vehicle with an eco-friendly personality. All other shoppers looking for those individual qualities can find other credible vehicles to fit their needs.

The Escalade offers a plush and pleasing passenger environment and most all the amenities one could want. The Hybrid adds in the chance to get exceptional regular-gas fuel economy for this type of vehicle. As such, it fills an interesting niche in the market.
