ACCELERATION
| sDrive30i, automatic | sDrive35i, manual | sDrive35i, automatic | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|

Both 6-cylinder engines are smooth and strong, with almost no turbo lag. BMW says the sDrive30i with automatic does 6.0 seconds 0-60, and the sDrive35i with automatic makes the same run in 5.0 seconds. Those claims feel credible to us. Both automatic transmissions are well-behaved around town, but the 6-speed auto in the sDrive30i is a bit slow to downshift while in normal drive mode. The automatics come with sport modes that hold gears longer for more spirited performance, and each can be shifted manually using the console lever or steering wheel-mounted paddles.
FUEL ECONOMY
| sDrive30i, automatic | sDrive35i, manual | sDrive35i, automatic | Class Average |

In Consumer Guide testing an sDrive35i averaged 26.1 mpg in mostly highway driving. All Z4 models require premium-grade gas.
RIDE QUALITY
| sDrive30i, automatic | sDrive35i, manual | sDrive35i, automatic | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4 | 3.7 |
With the standard tires and suspension, Z4 has a firm ride. The suspension can't quite smother bumps, but there is enough compliance so the ride isn't harsh. Ride quality suffers little with the available Sport Package.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| sDrive30i, automatic | sDrive35i, manual | sDrive35i, automatic | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | 9 | 9 | 7.2 |
Handling is agile and stable, and even the base tires are grippy. The powerful brakes are easy to modulate and feature excellent pedal feel. The available Sport Package does little overall to enhance handling prowess.
QUIETNESS
| sDrive30i, automatic | sDrive35i, manual | sDrive35i, automatic | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 5 | 3.6 |
Both engines sport wonderful exhaust notes that will bring a smile to an enthusiast's face. Top-down conversation is possible at highway speeds, but tire noise can be intrusive on coarse surfaces when the top is up.
CONTROLS
| sDrive30i, automatic | sDrive35i, manual | sDrive35i, automatic | Class Average |

The gauges are well placed and easy to read. Most switchgear is logical and easy to find. No opportunity to evaluate the optional navigation system with the latest generation of BMW's iDrive controller.

The Z4's classy interior uses premium materials and features fine craftsmanship. All Z4s made available for testing have had the "Kansas Leather" interior that is optional on sDrive30i and standard on sDrive35i. The optional wood trim adds to the swanky vibe.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| sDrive30i, automatic | sDrive35i, manual | sDrive35i, automatic | Class Average |

The cozy cabin has enough headroom and legroom for adults, and the standard manual tilt and telescopic steering wheel helps driver positioning. The optional power front seats are all-day comfortable, even for larger folk. The low sports-car stance and wide doors can seriously complicate entry and exit.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| sDrive30i, automatic | sDrive35i, manual | sDrive35i, automatic | Class Average |

No rear seating.

The trunk is fairly roomy for a two-seat sports car, but it shrinks a bit with the top down. BMW claims the optional through-loading system allows a single full-size golf bag to fit with the top down, or two can be stowed with the top up. Interior storage includes a glovebox, hinged door pockets, a shallow console tray, three cupholders, and a small shelf behind the seats. Cars without the optional navigation system get a small covered cubby on the dashtop.

BMW's revamped Z4 is a reasonably practical daily driver convertible, and a capable two-seat sports car for enthusiasts. Sweet 6-cylinder engines, a classy interior, and a rewarding driving experience are among the compelling traits the Z4 boasts. These cars are pricey, so careful navigation of the options list will deliver the best value.
