The redesigned A4 hits the sweet spot for ride/handling balance and the tradeoff between acceleration and fuel economy. Plus, its interior materials and assembly quality are impeccable. However, the A4's especially low driver-seat position and stingy door openings make entry and exit a bit of a drag for tall fellows like me. Also, the climate and stereo controls are more complicated than they should be.

A nicely equipped A4 2.0T Quattro with automatic can be had for about $34,000, seemingly a bargain compared to its Mercedes and BMW rivals. But in several measures, this Audi is sort of a second-class citizen in that group, as its powertrain just doesn't give the "premium" feel of the others. It's otherwise a great drive, but loses points for some small snafus that shouldn't be present in a car of this stature.
