ACCELERATION

Base Base w/Technology Pkg SH-AWD w/Technology Pkg Class Average
7 7 8 7.2

Both TL models get larger and more powerful engines for 2009, but they need the added might to overcome weight gains. To the variable intake-valve timing found in the base engine, the SH-AWD adds variable exhaust-valve timing for 2009 to improve power delivery above 4700 rpm. Drivers can now also use the paddle shifters to make manual shifts even with the transmission set in fully automatic mode. We wish Acura would include a manual shift gate in the console to supplement the paddles.

FUEL ECONOMY

Base Base w/Technology Pkg SH-AWD w/Technology Pkg Class Average
5 5 5 4.7

In Consumer Guide testing, AWD TL models averaged averaged 20.3-22.2 mpg. No opportunity to measure a base TL. All models require premium-grade gas.

RIDE QUALITY

Base Base w/Technology Pkg SH-AWD w/Technology Pkg Class Average
7 7 4 6.4

Base TL models are comfortable tourers, especially on the open road. They feel lighter on their feet than their racier all-wheel-drive sibling, which checks in about 250 pounds heavier. SH-AWD borders on performance-car stiff due to overly firm suspension damping and hard tires.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

Base Base w/Technology Pkg SH-AWD w/Technology Pkg Class Average
7 7 8 7.2

The electric power steering system requires low effort in low-speed situations, such as parking. Effort increases as speed rises, but it doesn't feel heavy or cumbersome. The SH-AWD deserves special praise for its stability in fast corners. Large brakes deliver impressive stopping power, though they're blunted a bit by a slightly wooden-feeling pedal.

QUIETNESS

Base Base w/Technology Pkg SH-AWD w/Technology Pkg Class Average
7 7 6 7

The exhaust in the SH-AWD is tuned differently than in the base model, but there's nothing intrusive or unpleasant about it. The engine is virtually silent at cruise. SH-AWD versions suffer from road and tire noise that are excessive for the class.

CONTROLS

Base Base w/Technology Pkg SH-AWD w/Technology Pkg Class Average
7 6 6 6.3

The TL's instrument panel features large and legible main gauges. The center stack and steering wheel have an excessive number of buttons, particularly on models equipped with the Technology Package. TLs so equipped use an "interface dial" to access these systems. It's not as complicated as some European premium cars, but a touch-screen would make things much simpler. The navigation screen in the Tech Package appears bright even in changing ambient light conditions, and its high placement doesn't distract from the road. Cars without the package display climate and audio information in place of the navigation screen.

DETAILS

Base Base w/Technology Pkg SH-AWD w/Technology Pkg Class Average
7 7 7 7.5

TL's cabin generally presents well, with rich-feeling leather and soft dash and door surfaces. Some hard and tacky looking plastics are disappointing, but most are kept of direct sight. A discreetly placed tray holds an MP3 player out of sight while connected to a USB port.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

Base Base w/Technology Pkg SH-AWD w/Technology Pkg Class Average
7 7 7 7.3

Headroom is just OK. The SH-AWD seats offer better grip during cornering than the base seats, but they don't feel cramped or restrictive at any point. Both seats are supportive and comfortable. Slim front roof pillars provide good forward visibility.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

Base Base w/Technology Pkg SH-AWD w/Technology Pkg Class Average
4 4 4 5.2

Entry and exit are uncomplicated, but TL has barely adequate headroom, knee clearance, and foot space. Tall passengers will be especially cramped.

CARGO ROOM

Base Base w/Technology Pkg SH-AWD w/Technology Pkg Class Average
4 4 3 3.9

Trunk space has been increased, but this is most evident in base models. To accommodate the rear differential in the SH-AWD, there is a rise in the trunk floor that robs most of the gains. The trunk opening narrows toward the bottom and hinges intrude into the trunk space--though they are covered so as not to damage cargo. Interior storage space is not great for the class: the door map pockets aren't especially large, and the center console box is set too far aft for convenient access.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

Base Base w/Technology Pkg SH-AWD w/Technology Pkg Class Average
7 8 5 6.5

TL is packed with safety features, and the optional Technology Package provides most any gadget a buyer could want. The majority of sales should come from the base model, which is the better choice in this lineup. The SH-AWD disappoints for its overly stiff ride and handling that can't quite match the high standards set by TL's German rivals.
