For something with this much off-road ability, the V8 Touareg is remarkably dignified on the highway. The interior accommodations are first rate, and the V8 sounds great when you stand on it. The window sticker is eye-opening, but this is one nice SUV.

Tom Appel

This bad boy is recognized as an upscale ride by those in the know--but other rides do a better job for a lot less coin. Despite Touareg's ingot-like solid feel, a dashboard squeak compromised my sense of invincibility driving this beast. My financial health came into question too, as my turn in this biggest VW ended with a 13.1 mpg fill. Need a big truck, think Chevy Tahoe. Want a sporty SUV, maybe go with the Acura MDX, want to look like you just spent a mint on an SUV, buy the Touareg.

The Volkswagen Touareg is one of my favorite SUVs, but they sure can be pricey. Touareg is very pleasant in everyday driving, especially for something with this level of off-road prowess, the beautifully finished interior is very comfortable, and to my eyes at least, the overall design is quite handsome. But you have to come back to that price. Our V10 TDI test truck stickered for a little more than $79,000.....you can get TWO V6 Touaregs for about the same coin.

Jennifer Geiger

Touareg is comfortable and classy inside, speedy on the highway, and relatively quiet and refined despite its diesel powertrain....but who's going to buy it? It's $80,000, diesel is almost $5.00 a gallon, and I averaged 16.7 mpg. It's just not worth it. The lack of a third-row option is also puzzling.

John Biel

The Touareg 2 in this test was comfortable and attractively finished. But it was extremely expensive, thanks to its being a V10 turbodiesel model that hikes the base price by very nearly $20,000(!) over the V8 model. Going diesel may be all the rage right now, but with fuel selling for $5.09-nine per gallon (as it was on the day this driver filled up) and the twin-turbo V10 getting about 19 mpg in day-to-day commuting, there's no real at-the-pump cost advantage that makes this big additional outlay worthwhile.

Lynne Richman

With the high fuel prices, I cannot justify the extra cost for the V10 diesel engine, especially when there are other, comparable SUVs for $20,000 less.

Rick Cotta

I have to think the market for $80,000 five-passenger SUVs that get 16 mpg on $5 fuel is small and shrinking. But this could well be the classiest and most robust tow vehicle on the planet, leaving it a prime choice for a chosen few.
