ACCELERATION
| Standard, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 4 | 4.8 |
Matrix and Vibe share a 4-cylinder engine that needs high rpm for best performance. Pontiac says base manual-transmission Vibe takes about 9.5 sec 0-60 mph; expect the same of comparable Matrix. Both feel slower yet with the automatic transmission, and passing power is tepid.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Standard, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 6.6 |
In Consumer Guide testing, a Matrix Standard with automatic transmission averaged 26.6 mpg. Matrix and Vibe use regular-grade fuel.
RIDE QUALITY
| Standard, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 5.2 |
Absorbs most bumps nicely, especially with the 16-inch tires. Optional 17-inch tires can trigger some jiggle over patchy pavement and freeway expansion breaks.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Standard, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 5.9 |
These tall wagons are more prone to crosswind wander at highway speeds than lower-built small cars, but they have responsive steering and assured cornering behavior with only moderate body lean. Optional 17-inch tires enhance grip. Stopping control is fine with the ABS.
QUIETNESS
| Standard, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 4 | 4.5 |
Disappointing. The engine is noisy at high rpm, and is none too relaxed in typical highway cruising. There's noticeable wind rush and coarse-surface tire thrum, too.
CONTROLS
| Standard, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 5.7 |
Matrix and Vibe share a dashboard design. Smallish gauges are set in deep tunnels, and they're not that easy to see in some daytime conditions. Their bright trim rings can dazzle. Control layout is simple and logical.
DETAILS
| Standard, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 5.2 |
Cabin design is modern and youthful. The interior is tightly assembled with sturdy materials nicely in line with prices.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Standard, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 5.7 |
The driving position is more upright than in a typical compact car. Fine headroom, even beneath the sunroof housing. Lanky adults may wish for more leg-stretching space. The seats are comfortable for long trips, but lack adequate lateral support for spirited driving. Visibility is slightly cluttered over the shoulder, good otherwise.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| Standard, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 4.1 |
Enough headroom and legroom for two large adults, but knee clearance gets tight with front seatbacks reclined, and the bench seat isn't that comfortable. The doors could open wider and need broader thresholds, but tall body minimizes stooping on entry/exit.
CARGO ROOM
| Standard, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 4.9 |
Front passenger seat folds flat for cargo-carrying versatility, as does the split rear seat. Fine overall space for the exterior size. The cargo floor is covered in durable plastic. Bountiful small-item storage includes a large glovebox and underfloor spaces around the spare tire.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| Standard, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 6.2 |
Matrix's main assets include good utility and fuel economy, and Toyota-reliable engineering. The gruff low-torque engine is a big debit, though. The similar Pontiac Vibe tends to carry deeper and more frequent discounts than the Matrix. The basic design is a bit old, so the redesigned version that's planned won't come soon enough.
