2008 Pontiac Torrent Review
The 2008 Pontiac Torrent lineup gains a new sporty model. This midsize SUV seats five and shares its basic design with the Chevrolet Equinox. It's available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Base Torrents have a 185-hp 3.4-liter V6 engine and a 5-speed automatic transmission. New for 2008 is the Torrent GXP, which has a 264-hp 3.6-liter V6 and a 6-speed automatic. Maximum towing capacity is 3500 lb. GXPs have a sport suspension and specific trim. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Torrent's rear seat can slide up to 8 inches in order to increase passenger or cargo space. Leather upholstery with heated front seats is available. Note that 2008 is Torrent's last model year. It's slated for replacement in calendar 2008 by the 2009 GMC Terrain. Torrent's performance and accommodations mirror those of similarly equipped Equinoxes.
Competition
Consumer Guide Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Larger than Compact SUVs, Midsize SUVs offer a mix of car- and truck-type construction, V6 and V8 power, and up to eight-passenger seating. This class also includes crossover vehicles.

Our Best Buy choices are the Honda Pilot, GMC Acadia, Mazda CX-9, and Saturn Outlook. Our Recommended picks are the Hyundai Santa Fe, Hyundai Veracruz, and Toyota Highlander.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Toyota Highlander.

News
There's a chance Torrent could transfer to the GMC line after 2008. The reason is the new Buick-Pontiac-GMC sales channel that General Motors is setting up, which hopes to sharpen brand images as a means to improved sales. GMC is known for trucks, and would thus be a more logical home for Torrent, especially as some GM execs want Pontiac to focus strictly on cars in the future. Then again, planners could decide GMC doesn't need a small car-type SUV. If Torrent does continue, and regardless of badge, it would presumably be redesigned for model-year 2010, as sources predict for parent Chevrolet Equinox.
