The Nissan 350Z offers sharp sports-car handling of course, but it doesn't feel as fast to me as its 306-hp rating would suggest. The 3.5 V6's peak horsepower and torque numbers come at a relatively high 6800 and 4800 rpm, respectively, and this engine doesn't seem particularly eager to rev quickly to get there. By comparison, the front-wheel drive MazdaSpeed 3 has 12 more ft-lbs of torque, which come on a full 1800 rpm sooner in the rev range.

The Nissan 350Z is a good choice for someone who wants a sports car with more power than a Mazda Miata. However, I find the less powerful Miata and other entry sports cars more fun to drive for less money.

The Enthusiast coupe strikes this tester as the best value in the 350Z group. All the key performance equipment, such as a limited-slip differential and traction control, are included in the base price and most everything else available on the higher-level models tends toward ladling on luxury, conveniences, and eye candy. It did cost $620 to add side and side-curtain airbags to the test car, however. Ultimately, though, the 350Z lacks the riding comfort and cargo room to make it a good day-in/day-out "driver."
