Introduced in concept form at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, the 2009 Volvo XC60 compact SUV should provide a much-needed shot in the arm to the Swedish automaker's lagging U.S. sales.

Based on parent-company Ford's P24 platform, XC60 shares some basic architecture with Land Rover's compact LR2 SUV.

CG Says...
It's about time. Volvo desperately needs some new products, and with XC60, is actually ahead of the curve, beating pending small luxury SUVs from Cadillac, Mercedes, and possibly Lexus to market. It looks great, too.

All U.S.-bound XC60s will have a six-speed automatic transmission. Power will come from a turbocharged six-cylinder engine borrowed from Volvo's S80 sedan. In XC60 guise the 3.2-liter engine produces 285 horsepower. According to Volvo, this makes it one of the most powerful vehicles in its class. At least initially, all XC60s will come with all-wheel drive.

The XC60 expands the Volvo SUV count to two. It will join the midsize XC90 in showrooms early in 2009. Volvo has not yet announced pricing for the XC60.
