Saleen, best known for building high-performance versions of the Ford Mustang, rolled out a homegrown mid-engine concept in New York.

Unlike most Saleen products, the S5S Raptor is not based on another manufacturer's product, but is designed wholly in house.

CG Says...
At about $700,000, the S7 never seemed that impressive-- something that expensive should be fabulous. At less than a quarter the price, a 620-horsepower mid-engine sports car is far more intriguing. Of course the Corvette ZR1 promises to match the power for a third less dough...tough crowd.

The sports car's mid-engine design places its 5.0-liter V8 between the axles for balanced weight distribution. The engine comes from Ford, but is tuned and supercharged by Saleen. Good for a claimed 620 horsepower, the two-seater is expected to top out at over 200 mph. As a bonus, the Raptor is E85 capable.

Unlike the Saleen S7, a purpose-built racecar that found its way into a few homes for street use, S5S Raptor is designed primarily for on-road driving.

Saleen has no immediate production plans for the Raptor but says that it will gauge public opinion before making a decision. Saleen says a production version of the Raptor would list for about $150,000.
