Nissan's flagship sedan gets a fresh face and more power for 2009. The refreshed Maxima returns for a seventh generation with sportier looks and the possibility of greener, cleaner models on the horizon.

The larger and more expensive of Nissan's two midsize sedans, Maxima will remain front-wheel drive and be powered by the VQ-series 3.5-liter V6 found in Infiniti' G35 and an updated CVT with a manual mode and available paddle shifters. The V6 makes 290 horsepower in this application and gives Maxima 35 more horsepower than the previous generation. Nissan estimates the new Maxima will achieve similar fuel economy despite the bump in power.

With the refreshed sedan, Nissan aims to restore the car to what it calls its "4-door sports car" heritage. Maxima returns on a slightly shorter wheelbase and is slightly shorter in overall length. It will be available in 3.5 S and 3.5 SV trims. Newly available features include 19-inch
aluminum-alloy wheels, a premium audio system with a 9.3-gigabyte hard drive, and a rearview monitoring system.

CG Says...
We're all about Nissan's Green Program, but wouldn't the current-generation Altima hybrid be a good place to start? Currently, Gas-electric Altimas are only available in a handful of "green" states. We hope that won't be the case with other alternative-fuel-powered Nissan products.

The news didn't stop there. Nissan also announced the launch of its Green Program. Expect to see more hybrid and diesel Nissans in 2010; Maxima is rumored to become available with both. After launch, Maxima could get a 3.0-liter V6 diesel powerplant developed by Nissan and French partner Renault.

Further out, a hybrid powertrain could make its way into Maxima for 2011. Also on tap is an electric-vehicle program. Look for the first EV Nissans in 2010 for fleet use and 2012 for public consumption.

The redesigned Maxima goes on sale this summer. Up next for Nissan is an xB-like cubed vehicle appropriately called Cube. The 2009 Nissan Cube will be unveiled at the L.A. Auto Show later this year.
