After teasing the buying public with a limited-edition top-line Challenger for 2008, Dodge rolls out a complete lineup for 2009. Scheduled to join the alpha-dog SRT8 in showrooms are R/T and SE models.

The R/T is best described as "SRT8 Light", sporting a smaller version of Dodge's ubiquitous HEMI V8 than the SRT8, and somewhat less-aggressive suspension tuning.

CG Says...
With the more mainstream R/T and SE models, Challenger is perfectly positioned to take a deep cut out of Ford Mustang sales. Look out!

Powered by a 370-horsepower 5.7-liter V8 mill, Dodge says that when equipped with the standard 6-speed manual transmission, Challenger R/T will sprint to 60 mph in about six seconds; roughly one second off the 420-horsepower SRT8's torrid pace. A 5-speed automatic will be available.

Rounding out the Challenger family is the entry-level SE. Powered by a 250-horsepower V6, Challenger SE will be available only with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Dodge says SE prices will start in the low $20,000 range.

In addition to the new Challenger models, Dodge is making a manual transmission available on SRT8s for 2009. After building only automatic-equipped versions for a year, SRT8s will come standard with a 6-speed manual unit. The 5-speed automatic becomes optional.

The 2009 Challengers are scheduled to arrive in Dodge showrooms this fall.
