Hyundai attempts to go high class and high performance with the coupe version of its new-for-2009 Genesis sedan. Unveiled at the 2008 New York Auto Show, the Genesis coupe is based on the concept shown last year at L.A.'s show and represents what Hyundai calls its "most emotional design ever."

Hyundai rolled out the Genesis coupe as the first new product under its "24/7 version 2.0" new-product campaign. South Korea's biggest automaker, known for its value-priced and budget-minded vehicles, plans to unveil seven new products during the next two years and get into segments it has yet to try. Enter the performance-oriented sports coupe targeted at driving enthusiasts, a customer set Hyundai hasn't seriously pursued with other vehicles in its lineup.

CG Says...
Prices are going to have to be competitive and quality top-notch in order for Hyundai to really play in the premium-car marketplace. It remains to be seen if Hyundai can succeed in its move up market. So far, as Hyundai prices climb, so too does quality and overall value.

The front-engine, rear-wheel-drive Genesis coupe features a 306-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 that can make 310 horsepower on premium fuel. Hyundai expects the V6 to do 0-60 mph in under six seconds. Also available is Hyundai's first-ever turbocharged powerplant for the U.S. market: a 212-223-horsepower (again dependent on fuel grade) 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. A V8 will not be available. Transmission choices include a standard 6-speed manual and optional 5- and 6-speed automatics with paddle shifters.

Genesis coupe will be available in GS, GT, and SE trims. Standards include six airbags, an electronic stability system, and Bluetooth wireless connectivity. Other features include 18- or 19-inch wheels, an Infinity-brand audio system, and an i-Pod jack.

While Hyundai claimed Genesis coupe would be the most affordable 300-plus horsepower sports coupe on the planet, actual prices were not announced. We expect the 4-cylinder to come in around the $20,000 mark and the V6 to command somewhere around $25,000 when it goes on sale in spring of 2009.
