You've got to stay fresh to stay on top, and Fit is in just such a place. Honda has sold two-million units worldwide and '08 sales are currently up 87 percent versus last year at this time. Just two years after Honda launched its entry-level Fit for model-year 2007, the popular subcompact hatchback gets a full redesign, more features, and a little more "go."

The current-generation Fit's 109-horsepower 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine carries over with tweaks that boost horsepower to 118 for 2009. Transmission choices include a 5-speed automatic or 5-speed manual.

CG Says...
The new-for-2007 Fit is merely a pup. We applaud Honda breaking its traditional four-year refresh/redesign schedule to keep Fit fresh in this competitive class. Fit is the entry-level car that feels far from it. We're looking forward to our first test drive.

For 2009, Fit's windshield moves 4.7 inches forward, giving it a less boxy and more angular-looking front end, while the rear end gets more of a squared-off look. Fit also gets a meatier new grille inspired by the redesigned-for-2009 Honda Pilot.

Base and Sport models are again available. The new Fit also grows slightly for 2009, riding on a two-inch-longer wheelbase. Its overall length is increased by 2.2 inches; width by almost an inch. The result is more interior room and something Honda calls "Swiss Army-like flexibility." Fit's seats can be moved into four different configurations with a new one-motion drop-down function.

Other new interior features include higher-grade materials, more small items storage and cup holders, a USB port, a navigation system, and 15- or 16-inch wheels. Fit arrives in dealerships this fall.
