Vehicle Highlights
The 2008 Mercedes-Benz G-Class sees no major changes. Mercedes-Benz designed this traditional truck-type 4-door wagon in the 1970s for military use. "G" denotes Gelaendewagen--German for cross-country vehicle. Two models are offered. The G500 has a 292-hp 5.0-liter V8. The G55 from Mercedes' AMG performance division has a 469-hp supercharged 5.4-liter V8. A 5-speed automatic is the only transmission. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, and curtain side airbags. All-wheel drive with low-range gearing is standard. Designed for severe off-road use, the AWD system includes locking front, center, and rear differentials. Both G500 and G55 come with 18-inch alloy wheels. G55 also gets its own chrome trim and chrome side-exit exhaust pipes. Both models come with a sunroof, wood/leather interior trim, heated front and rear seats, assistance and navigation systems, and rear obstacle detection.
