2008 Mazda RX-8 Full Review
Date Published: 6/26/08
2008 Mazda RX-8 Review
The 2008 Mazda RX-8 is little changed. This four-passenger sporty coupe is unique for using a rotary engine, which replaces pistons pumping in cylinders with triangular rotors spinning in oval chambers. It also has rear access doors that don't open independently of the fronts. RX-8 comes in Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring models. Each has a 232-hp 1.3-liter rotary engine with a 6-speed manual transmission, or a 212-hp 1.3-liter rotary engine with a 6-speed automatic. The automatic allows manual shifting via floor lever or steering-wheel paddles. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, an antiskid system, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Mazda offers a special Anniversary model to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its rotary engine. Special features include Metropolitan Gray exterior paint, a Cosmo Red leather interior, unique 18-inch alloy wheels, suspension enhancements, and specific badging. A firmer suspension, 18-inch wheels, and limited-slip differential are optional for the automatic-transmission Sport, standard otherwise. Exclusive to the Grand Touring and Anniversary models are leather upholstery, heated front seats, power driver seat, and keyless entry and starting.
Competition
Consumer Guide Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. The Sporty/Performance Car class consists of two-seat roadsters, 4-cylinder hatchbacks, and V8 muscle cars. Regardless of configuration, all have an emphasis on affordable performance.

Our Best Buys include the Mazda MX-5 and Scion tC. Our Recommended picks are the Ford Mustang and Mini Cooper. New this year is the Mini Cooper Clubman.

News
Late word from Japan and Detroit is that Mazda won't do a two-seat RX-8 after all. The company is said to feel the car wouldn't draw enough sales to cover design and manufacturing costs. The RX-8 itself is rumored for a 2010-model redesign that bows in early 2009. Nothing major should happen to the current model before then, but Mazda promises improved dealer treatment for RX-8 owners, many of whom have endured assorted engine problems.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Grand Touring w/navigation, manual 40th Anniversary, manual Class Average
6 6 6.6

We've only tested manual-transmission RX-8s so far. Though we've not had an opportunity to time it, RX-8 requires lofty engine speeds for maximum acceleration. Its low- and mid-range power is lacking, making it difficult at times to negotiate heavy traffic. Shift action is smooth and precise, though clutch action is heavy.
Fuel Economy

Grand Touring w/navigation, manual 40th Anniversary, manual Class Average
4 4 5.3

Dismal, even for a performance car. In Consumer Guide testing, our manual-transmission test cars averaged 13.9 mpg in mostly city driving, 16.2-16.7 mpg with more highway use. RX-8 requires premium-grade gas.
Ride Quality

Grand Touring w/navigation, manual 40th Anniversary, manual Class Average
5 4 4.1

RX-8's ride shows the expected firmness of a sporty car, but the suspension does a good job of filtering out any harshness. The 40th Anniversary's performance suspension takes a toll on overall ride comfort.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Grand Touring w/navigation, manual 40th Anniversary, manual Class Average
10 10 8

Firm, direct steering, along with great grip and balance make RX-8 a delight. It exhibits minimal body lean while cornering. The brakes deliver good overall stopping control, but the pedal in one test car felt overly sensitive.
Quietness

Grand Touring w/navigation, manual 40th Anniversary, manual Class Average
4 4 3.2

The engine produces a pleasant, mechanical growl during acceleration and recedes mostly into the background while cruising. Wind rush is minimal, but the tires roar over most pavement surfaces. Sharp bumps triggered some noise from the suspension in one test car.
Controls

Grand Touring w/navigation, manual 40th Anniversary, manual Class Average
7 7 5.6

The climate controls are simple to use, though they're mounted a bit low for easiest access. The audio system has lots of buttons, but they're all clearly marked. Not all of our testers like the digital readout of climate and audio information on the top of the dashboard. The navigation system doesn't incorporate any other functions, which is a plus, and its operation requires familiarization. When the console cupholders are in use, shifting the manual transmission is awkward.
Details

Grand Touring w/navigation, manual 40th Anniversary, manual Class Average
6 6 4.8

Though RX-8's interior is composed of mostly hard plastic, appearance and quality of the interior materials is a cut above those of the Ford Mustang and Nissan 350Z.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Grand Touring w/navigation, manual 40th Anniversary, manual Class Average
5 5 5.4

Most of our testers found it difficult to find a comfortable driving position. The sunroof housing cramps headroom for even average-size adults. Legroom is just adequate. The steering column tilts but isn't telescopic, which further detracts from comfort. The seats are supportive enough but only for those of average girth. Thick rear roof pillars severely compromise aft visibility.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Grand Touring w/navigation, manual 40th Anniversary, manual Class Average
2 2 1.4

Mazda deserves kudos for the RX-8's rear access doors, however, legroom and headroom in the rear seat are best reserved for small children.
Cargo Room

Grand Touring w/navigation, manual 40th Anniversary, manual Class Average
2 2 2.9

The trunk has strut-type hinges that don't intrude into the cargo area. The bay is surprisingly deep, but the opening is too small for loading anything larger than small duffel bags. Interior storage is very poor. The door pockets are virtually useless, and the center console is shallow and located in an inconvenient spot aft of the front seats.
Value within Class

Grand Touring w/navigation, manual 40th Anniversary, manual Class Average
4 4 6

RX-8 delights for its exceptional handling ability and slick-shifting manual transmission. The rotary engine that makes this car unique is its biggest liability, however. It feels underpowered and delivers subpar fuel economy. Interior comfort also fails to impress, and lofty sticker prices further diminish this sporty car's appeal.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

From The Back Seat
Damon Bell The RX-8 trumps the Nissan 350Z and Ford Mustang in terms of overall refinement, but can't match either of those rivals in straightline acceleration. Likewise, the unique character of the RX-8's unconventional powertrain is offset somewhat by its middling fuel economy. Still, the RX-8 presents itself as an attractive alternative to the conventional sporty/performance car.

Ed Piotrowski The rotary engine that makes RX-8 unique is probably its biggest downfall. The fact that it can pack up to 232 horsepower in an engine that displaces just 1.3 liters is quite the engineering feat. Making best use of all those ponies is a different matter entirely, however. You need to keep the engine speed high in order to extract maximum power, and even then this sporty car just doesn't feel that quick. The rotary's fuel efficiency compared to a traditional gas engine is also below average, and needing to keep the revs high further reduces mileage. Overall, this is a great choice for the tuner crowd because they could easily add the turbo or supercharger this car desperately needs in order to bring acceleration in line with its handling. It'll cost plenty, though, because RX-8 isn't a cheap ride by any stretch. If its starting price were $5000 lower across the board, you could make a solid case, but as it sits, there are plenty of better choices in this segment.

Jennifer Geiger RX-8 is unique in the class because of its rotary engine and rear doors--it’s sports car nimble and rear-passenger friendly. However, this sporty/performance car’s lofty base price, portly, muscular styling, poor fuel economy, and awful visibility would personally make me shop elsewhere in the class.

Tom Appel Mazda's problem is an unhealthy dedication to this pointless powertrain. The RX-8's rotary engine scores the magic triumvirate of powertrain flaws: it's weak, it's thirsty, and it sounds kinda weird. RX-8 scores bonus futility points for having four doors but no interior room. This is all a shame, because the RX-8 is one of the sweetest handling cars I've ever driven.

From The Back Seat
Jack Stewart The RX-8 is a good car for those wanting more interior room and power than a MX-5. There have been few cars that I have enjoyed as much as RX-8. The fun-to-drive factor overcomes many of the car's faults. Unfortunately, having too much fun results in poor gas mileage.

John Biel There's a fair bit of sophistication packed into the RX-8 and about all the equipment there is to be had on the 40th Anniversary model. Thus, this tester doesn't find it overly expensive at $32,435 delivered--especially against the "also consider" Nissan 350Z. But the RX-8 is cramped, its best performance is reserved for situations in which you'll probably drive the least often, and it's thirsty. That makes it hard to truly love this Zoom-Zoomy Mazda no matter what the price.
