The Mazdaspeed 3 is one of my favorite pocket rockets. It's not entirely immune to the turbo lag and torque steer typical of hopped-up front-wheel-drive compacts, but I love its direct steering, smooth shifter, crisp handling, taut-yet-livable suspension, and practical body style. I also appreciate its understated looks and lack of boy-racer add-ons. If you get one in a muted color like our tester, it's rather inconspicous, which can be a good thing with a car this fast.

The Mazdaspeed 3 is a jack of all trades, master of none in the realm of factory-tuned performance cars. It's fun to toss around, yet is pretty practical. A stiff clutch and notchy shifter frustrate in heavy traffic, and its noise and firm seats wouldn't make it a good choice for a long road trip. Though more expensive, Volkswagen's GTI has the formula nailed - it's easier to live with as a daily driver, and it acquits itself well when pushed hard.
