ACCELERATION
| AWD Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 6.2 |
Only AWD models been made available for us to test so far. They have smooth, linear power for good around-town response and ready highway acceleration.
FUEL ECONOMY
| AWD Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 4 | 3.2 |
In Consumer Guide testing, MKXs averaged 16.5-16.7 mpg in mostly city driving and 19.4 with more highway miles. MKX uses regular-grade gas.
RIDE QUALITY
| AWD Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 5.7 |
Even with the available 20-inch wheels, MKX absorbs most road imperfections with aplomb, resulting in a stable, comfortable ride.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| AWD Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 5.6 |
Body lean and noseplow are evident in brisk cornering, but MKX is competent otherwise. The steering is slightly numb and light in straight-line cruising.
QUIETNESS
| AWD Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 6.6 |
Lincoln says MKX has more sound-deadening measures than Edge, but it doesn't really translate into a more serene driving experience. The engine sounds a bit unrefined for a luxury-oriented vehicle. Wind and road noise levels are higher than we would expect. When fully open, the panoramic sunroof generates some turbulence at highway speeds.
CONTROLS
| AWD Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 6 |
The gauges and switches are unobstructed, but the instrument markings lack contrast when the backlight is turned off, making them hard to read. Some drivers may have to stretch to reach the navigation touch screen and its controls. The navigation system absorbs most audio functions. Ford's Sync voice-control system generally works, though it sometimes has trouble distinguishing spoken commands for audio and cell phone functions.

MKX is only slightly more upscale of its Edge sibling. This Lincoln makes wise use of padded surfaces and genuine wood trim. Many of the other interior surfaces are dull, painted plastic that look nothing like the metal they are supposed to imitate. The lack of an available rearview camera is an embarrassing omission at this price level.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| AWD Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 7.4 |
Taller occupants may want more head clearance beneath the housing for the panoramic roof. Legroom is only adequate, even for passengers who aren't very tall. Rear headrests partially block the rearward view.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| AWD Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 6.2 |
Fine accommodations with a firm, chair-height bench. Legroom is good, but taller passengers will find headroom lacking beneath the sunroof housing. The seatback reclines, but its release lever also allows it to fold forward too readily.
CARGO ROOM
| AWD Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 8 | 8.4 |
Spacious with the rear seats up or down with a low deck for easy loading. The rear seatbacks conveniently drop via a remote release, though they don't fold completely flat. Interior storage includes a large center console, small glovebox and small dashboard bin.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| AWD Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 5.8 |
It's as not posh or refined as some premium crossovers, but MKX is competitive in power, size, and equipment levels. The question is whether the Lincoln brand has enough cache to draw buyers over from the prestige imports, or up from the Ford Edge, which shares the MKX's basic design.
