The drivetrain in the Lexus GS 460 is quite good with an abundance of power when you want it, and a silky-smooth 8-speed automatic that helped it return impressive highway fuel economy during my test. I was disappointed in the lack of headroom for my six foot-tall frame, and the interior's wood trim that trails rival's wood for appearance.

Though Consumer Guide has one class dubbed "Premium Midsize Cars," there are two distinct subsets. One can be classified as "entry" with vehicles such as the Acura TL, Cadillac CTS, Infiniti G, and Lexus ES. The other is comprised of slightly larger and more expensive entries including the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series, and this Lexus GS. Comparably equipped, the GS 460 is a little bit more expensive than an Infiniti M45 or Cadillac STS but much cheaper than a BMW 550i or Mercedes-Benz E550. While a somewhat hard ride and cramped rear seat hurt it, the oft-overlooked GS 460 is fun to drive and comes backed with the brand's strong customer service record. Give it a look.

Smooth handling and nice power make the GS 460 a pleasure from the driver¿s seat, but getting that V8 powerteam shoots up the cost. The lack of passenger room seems to be quite a shortcoming in a car that, like our tester, stickers at nearly $60,000 delivered.
