2008 Lexus ES 350 Full Review
Date Published: 4/30/08
2008 Lexus ES 350 Review
The 2008 Lexus ES 350 is largely unchanged. The ES remains essentially a luxury version of the Toyota Camry; Lexus is Toyota's premium division. The ES 350 is powered by a 272-hp 3.5-liter V6. The sole transmission is a 6-speed automatic. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, an antiskid system, front side airbags, curtain side airbags, rear side airbags, and front knee airbags. Lexus's Pre-Collision System, which readies airbags, seatbelts, and brakes when sensors detect a skid or imminent crash is optional. It's paired with adaptive cruise control.

Wood interior trim and a sunroof are included, but leather upholstery is optional. Other options include the Ultra Luxury Package with a "panorama" glass roof, a navigation system with a rearview camera, and steering-linked headlamps.
Competition
Consumer Guide Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Premium Midsize Cars sport interior dimensions similar to Midsize Cars. Premium Midsize Cars offer more luxury, performance, and prestige when compared to Midsize Cars.

Our Best Buys include the Cadillac CTS, Infiniti G, and Lexus ES 350. Our Recommended picks are the Acura TL, Infiniti M, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

New or significantly redesigned models include the BMW 5-Series, Cadillac CTS, Volvo V70, and Volvo XC70.

News
The latest ES has just launched, so no major near-term changes are forecast. A gas/electric hybrid version seems a strong possibility by 2009.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Base w/Premium Plus Base w/Ultra Luxury Class Average
7 7 7

ES 350 scoots from a stop with satisfying strength. In Consumer Guide testing, an ES 350 did 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds. The transmission changes gears smoothly, but it can require lots of throttle to deliver a highway-speed downshift.
Fuel Economy

Base w/Premium Plus Base w/Ultra Luxury Class Average
5 5 4.6

In Consumer Guide testing, ES 350s averaged 19.6-19.8 mpg overall. Other examples averaged 23.6-26.3 mpg in mostly highway driving and 18.9 with more city use and gas-eating acceleration runs. Lexus recommends premium-grade gas.
Ride Quality

Base w/Premium Plus Base w/Ultra Luxury Class Average
7 7 6.3

ES 350 excels for cushioned comfort but trails rivals for composure on bumpy roads. Some bobbing and pitching is noted at high speeds.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base w/Premium Plus Base w/Ultra Luxury Class Average
5 5 7.1

ES 350 has competent front-drive behavior. But the ride-biased suspension tuning precludes the sporty cornering poise of the BMW 3-Series, Cadillac CTS, or Infiniti G35. The steering filters out most road feel. Brake performance is good, though the pedal feels mushy in simulated panic stops.
Quietness

Base w/Premium Plus Base w/Ultra Luxury Class Average
8 8 7

Among class leaders, with excellent isolation from road and wind noise. The V6 suffers minor vibration at idle but sounds rich in rapid acceleration.
Controls

Base w/Premium Plus Base w/Ultra Luxury Class Average
7 7 6.1

The large gauges are clearly marked. The steering wheel spoke hides the windshield wiper stalk, and the rain-sensing wiper function is frustratingly inconsistent. The navigation system absorbs some audio and climate controls, requiring familiarization.
Details

Base w/Premium Plus Base w/Ultra Luxury Class Average
8 8 7.4

Though dull looking to some testers, wood trim, padded surfaces, and grained panels combine to create an upscale, if not quite opulent, cabin environment.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base w/Premium Plus Base w/Ultra Luxury Class Average
7 7 7.3

Tall occupants will complain of too little headroom beneath the housing from the sunroof or panorama ceiling. Legroom is generous, though. The seats are nicely padded and contoured for set-and-forget support. Outward visibility is very good, enhanced by the convenience of the available rearview camera.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base w/Premium Plus Base w/Ultra Luxury Class Average
6 6 5.2

Again, taller riders will want more headroom. Knees won't be cramped, through foot space is a tad tight beneath front seats. The cushion is comfortably shaped but is a little low to the floor for best thigh support. Three-across will be OK for short distances thanks to the soft padding and a nearly flat floorboard that makes the center position more comfortable than most competitors. The panorama roof enhances the airy cabin feel. Entry and exit are easy.
Cargo Room

Base w/Premium Plus Base w/Ultra Luxury Class Average
3 3 4.1

Sickle-shaped trunklid hinges impede on the otherwise roomy and usefully shaped trunk. Liftover is low, but the opening is cramped for loading bulky boxes. The rear seatback has a pass-through opening. Cabin storage is just adequate. The center console lid slides up and back, making access to the storage bin awkward.
Value within Class

Base w/Premium Plus Base w/Ultra Luxury Class Average
10 9 6.2

Lexus paints its trimmer, tauter IS model as a performance luxury car. The bigger, more comfortable ES 350 is focused on coddling, which it does extremely well. That's what makes ES a Best Buy pick among premium midsize cars.

Trim Name Retail Price Dealer Invoice Destination Charge
Base 4-door sedan $33,820 $29,987 $765
Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
