ACCELERATION
| Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 5.6 |
Limited's refined V6 furnishes snappy takeoffs and is aided by a responsive automatic transmission. In Consumer Guide testing, a Limited did 6.2 sec 0-60 mph. The manual shift gate is useful for hill-and-dale driving. No opportunity to test a GLS with the smaller V6.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 5.5 |
In Consumer Guide testing, Azeras powered by the 3.8-liter V6 averaged 19.9-21.5 mpg in mixed city/highway driving, 24.0 mpg in mostly highway use. Azera uses regular-grade gas.
RIDE QUALITY
| Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 6 |
The ride attempts to mimic the plush feel of the impressive Toyota Avalon, but Azera is harsher over small bumps. It falls well short of all-around composure with excessive wallow and float on uneven surfaces.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 6 |
Limited corners with decent grip, modest body lean, and positive, but light, steering feel. The strong brakes are easily modulated.
QUIETNESS
| Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 6.1 |
Coarse-surface tire thrum is noticed, but it never annoys. Wind rush rises with speed, but it doesn't intrude much either. Limited's V6 emits raspy growl at full throttle, is otherwise hushed. One test car's suspension made an occasional clunking noise.
CONTROLS
| Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 6.3 |
Logical and stylish dashboard puts large, clearly marked gauges and controls within easy view and reach. The steering wheel masks the dashboard-mounted ignition switch.
DETAILS
| Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 5.5 |
Attractive cabin materials are not quite to Lexus levels, but there are enough padded surfaces and carefully executed details present to belie Azera's price.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 8 | 6.7 |
Plentiful legroom. Headroom is ample despite a relatively high seating position, which combines with a lowish dashtop and large windows for fine all-around visibility. The driving position is easily tailored with a standard power seat, tilt and telescopic steering column, and Limited's optional power-adjustable pedals. The seats are nicely contoured for good overall support.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 5.1 |
Adult-friendly headroom, knee clearance, and foot space. Occupant's legs aren't crowded with front seats pushed well back, but three adults may be a squeeze. No-sweat entry and exit.
CARGO ROOM
| Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 4 | 4.1 |
The trunk is not huge, but it is efficiently shaped, easily accessed, and expandable via standard fold-down rear seatbacks. The covered sickle-shaped trunklid hinges sit well outboard and steal little cargo space. Good cabin storage with a large bi-level console bin and front-seatback pockets offsetting the small door map pockets.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 6.2 |
Azera delivers an eye-opening array of standard safety features while furnishing impressive room, refinement, amenities, and build quality. Indifferent ride control lets it down, but overall, this Hyundai stacks up well against larger rivals, such as the Mercury Sable and Toyota Avalon.
