2008 GMC Sierra 1500 Full Review
Date Published: 4/30/08
2008 GMC Sierra 1500 Review
The 2008 GMC Sierra adds a new off-road themed model. These large trucks were redesigned for the 2007 model year along with the similar Chevrolet Silverado. Sierra offers regular, extended, and crew cab body styles. Extended cabs have rear-hinged back doors that don't open independently of the fronts. Regular cabs can seat up to three passengers, while extendeds and crews can seat up to six. Available cargo bed lengths are 6.5 and 8.1 ft for regular and extended cab models and 5.8 ft for crews. The 2008 GMC Sierra offers two interiors, dubbed "Pure Pickup" and "Luxury inspired." Available engines, depending on cab/bed configuration, are a 195-hp 4.3-liter V6, 295-hp 4.8-liter V8, 315-hp 5.3-liter V8, and 367-hp 6.0-liter V8. Some versions of the 5.3 V8 can run on E85 ethanol fuel. That engine and the 6.0 V8 have GM's Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation. All these engines pair with a 4-speed automatic transmission. Unique to the Sierra lineup is the top-end Denali. It's a crew cab with a 403-hp 6.2-liter V8 and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Maximum towing capacity is 10,500 lb. Rear-wheel drive is standard. Two 4WD systems are available: a part-time setup that should not be left engaged on dry pavement and GM's Autotrac that can. Both include a low-range gear for off-roading. Sierra Denali has all-wheel drive without low-range gearing. Four suspensions are available. Z83 and Z85 are designed for optimum ride comfort. Z60 is a street-performance setup designed for maximum handling capability. Z71 is designed for off-roading. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, and curtain side airbags. The 2008 GMC Sierra All Terrain is a new package that includes the Z71 suspension and specific interior and exterior trim.
Competition
Consumer Guide Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Large Pickup Trucks are traditionally the vehicles of choice for heavy-duty hauling and towing. They offer an array of cab styles and bed lengths and usually feature powerful V8 or diesel engines. For personal use, consider light-duty half-ton models. For heavy-duty or commercial use, consider three-quarter- or one-ton models.

We have no Best Buys in this class. Our Recommended picks are the Chevrolet Avalanche, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ford F-150, GMC Sierra 1500, and Toyota Tundra.

News
The redesigned Sierras and Chevrolet Silverados use the "GMT900" large-truck architecture introduced with the '07 GMC Yukon/Yukon XL SUVs and their relatives. A hybrid power option is planned for late model-year 2008. The result of a GM-DaimlerChrysler-BMW collaboration, this "two-mode" system is said to use twin electric motors and a 300-volt battery pack to assist a 5.3 V8 with GM's Active Fuel Management. It allows low-speed driving on either power source, and promises better overall fuel economy than conventional powertrains.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

4WD ext. cab Z60, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z71, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z85, 5.3 V8 Denali Class Average
6 6 6 7 5.4

Acceleration is more than adequate with the 5.3-liter V8 and robust with the Denali's 6.2 V8. Smooth-shifting transmission kicks down quickly for more passing power. Tow/Haul mode adjusts shift points for best performance with heavy loads. Denali's shifter-stalk-mounted manual-shift control works with an easy flick of the thumb. Maximum towing capacity is 10,500 lb.
Fuel Economy

4WD ext. cab Z60, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z71, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z85, 5.3 V8 Denali Class Average
3 3 3 3 2.8

In Consumer Guide testing, 4WD Sierras averaged 14.1 mpg. Test Denalis averaged 14.6-15.9 mpg. All Sierras except the Denali use regular-grade gas. GMC recommends premium for the Denali. Some 5.3-liter engines can also run on E85 ethanol fuel.
Ride Quality

4WD ext. cab Z60, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z71, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z85, 5.3 V8 Denali Class Average
5 5 6 5 4.5

Sierra's Z85 suspension provides a comfortable, compliant ride, and there's less reverberation over bumps than in most pickups. Stiffer Z60 suspension makes the ride more jittery over smaller bumps, partly due to its 20-inch tires vs. standard 17s. Available Z71 suspension is suited to off-road duty. It exhibits some choppiness over pavement cracks and washboard surfaces, though it's not overly harsh in everyday driving. Denali with 20-inch tires composed enough, though the standard 18s are likely to offer more stability.
Steering/Handling/Braking

4WD ext. cab Z60, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z71, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z85, 5.3 V8 Denali Class Average
4 3 3 3 3.5

Being these are large pickups, there's noticeable body lean in fast turns and quick changes of direction with Z85 suspension. Z60 and Z71 suspensions improve handling only slightly. The steering is nicely weighted, if a bit numb, and the brakes are responsive with fine pedal feel.
Quietness

4WD ext. cab Z60, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z71, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z85, 5.3 V8 Denali Class Average
6 6 6 6 5.5

Road noise in Sierra is lower than in most pickups. The 5.3-liter V8 is a model of refinement. Wind noise intrudes only above 60 mph.
Controls

4WD ext. cab Z60, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z71, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z85, 5.3 V8 Denali Class Average
7 6 6 7 6.2

The gauges are easy to see and read. Sierra's Pure Pickup interior places radio and climate controls high on the dashboard, just out of easy reach. The available luxury interior mimics that of the Yukon large SUV, with controls mounted lower but within easy reach. The optional navigation system absorbs some audio controls but doesn't complicate their use. Denalis expand on the luxury interior, with upgraded trim and overall upscale feel.
Details

4WD ext. cab Z60, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z71, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z85, 5.3 V8 Denali Class Average
6 5 5 6 5.2

Pure Pickup interior materials are better than expected of a work-oriented truck, but are not extraordinary by absolute standards. The Luxury trim ups the ante with materials that are a cut above the pickup norm, even though most surfaces are hard plastic.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

4WD ext. cab Z60, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z71, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z85, 5.3 V8 Denali Class Average
9 9 9 9 8.1

Ample room for adults. Both the bucket and bench seats lack side support in fast turns but are firm and comfortable. Visibility is generally good, though the extended cab's thick rear pillars hinder view to back corners. Short drivers will appreciate the optional power-adjustable pedals.
Room/Comfort (rear)

4WD ext. cab Z60, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z71, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z85, 5.3 V8 Denali Class Average
4 8 8 8 5.1

Generous headroom. Legroom is ample in the crew cab. Extended cab models have a seatback set at a comfortable angle, but legroom is in short supply. With the front bucket seats, the center console restricts foot space for a center rear-seat passenger. Extended's rear doors are available with power windows, which is a nice convenience. The doors open wide--nearly flush with the cargo bed--for easier entry and exit, but if fully open, a seated passenger can't close it.
Cargo Room

4WD ext. cab Z60, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z71, 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab Z85, 5.3 V8 Denali Class Average
5 6 6 6 5

On both extended and crew cabs, the rear seat cushion flips back against the seatback, leaving a large cargo area with a nearly flat floor. Pure Pickup interior features upper and lower gloveboxes; Luxury interior has only a lower one. In front, the bucket seats come with a roomy console bin, while the bench seat is available with a flip-down center armrest that doubles as a large storage bin. Otherwise, there are few other interior storage cubbies.

GMC's Sierra and the similar Chevrolet Silverado are among the best large pickup trucks for refinement and available features. Any truck buyer would be well-advised to give these Recommended picks a long, hard look.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
