2008 Ford F-150 Review
The 2008 Ford F-150 gets a few new features as it awaits a redesign due for model-year 2009. F-150 comes in regular cab, extended SuperCab, and crew cab SuperCrew versions. All have 4 doors. Rear doors on regulars and SuperCabs are rear hinged and don't open independently of the fronts. Extendeds and SuperCrews have a rear bench seat for up to six-passenger capacity. Bed lengths are 5.5 and 6.5 feet, and, for regular and SuperCabs, up to 8 ft. All boxes are flush-fender Stylesides; the 6.5-foot box is available as a bulged-fender Flareside. Engine choices include a 202-hp 4.2-liter V6; 248-hp 4.6-liter V8; and 300-hp 5.4-liter V8. Optional on the top-end Harley-Davidson model is a 450-hp supercharged V8. The V6 is available with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic. Maximum towing capacity is 10,500 lb. The V8s are automatic only. All F-150s offer rear-wheel drive. V8 models are available with 4-wheel drive that should not be left engaged on dry pavement but include a low-range gear for off-roading. All-wheel drive is available on the Harley-Davidson. Other trim levels include XL, STX, XLT, FX4, King Ranch, and Harley-Davidson. Available safety features include ABS and traction control.
Competition
Consumer Guide Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Large Pickup Trucks are traditionally the vehicles of choice for heavy-duty hauling and towing. They offer an array of cab styles and bed lengths and usually feature powerful V8 or diesel engines. For personal use, consider light-duty half-ton models. For heavy-duty or commercial use, consider three-quarter- or one-ton models.

We have no Best Buys in this class. Our Recommended picks are the Chevrolet Avalanche, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ford F-150, GMC Sierra 1500, and Toyota Tundra.

News
Ford may be in dire straits, but it's determined to defend the F-Series from new Chevrolet and GMC competition. As a result, 2009 models are said to get freshened styling, underskin improvements, and a new "Hurricane" V8 in either 5.8-liter and/or 6.2-liter sizes. A 6-cyl diesel and a 6-speed automatic transmission may be offered at the same time. Introduction is reportedly set for summer 2008. A similarly revamped Lincoln Mark LT is expected to start sale about four months later.
