Sensible design is its own reward. Exhibit A: the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan. More than a box on wheels -- though happily it's that, too -- this people mover goes down the road with surprising verve, responding accurately to every driver input. Some "performance" cars don't do that. Sure, its cornering limits are modest, but that's no knock. Load it with family and luggage, move around inside, have a little dough left over after your monthly payment, and reap the rewards of a device that efficiently and comfortably delivers exactly what it promises.

The Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna may better Dodge's new Caravan and its Chrysler Town and Country sibling in terms of overall refinement. But Caravan's unparalleled cargo versatility, family-friendly functionality, and loads of thoughtful, exclusive available features keep it at the head of the minivan class.

The 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan doesn't leapfrog its import rivals in any one area. What it does do is blend versatility, comfort, and a solid features mix at reasonable prices. That's what makes it a Best Buy in a class of vehicles that becoming more irrelevant almost on a daily basis.

Grand Caravan offers the space of a rolling great room, yet is maneuverable and gets reasonable fuel economy.

Feature-laden and dynamically capable, the Grand Caravan disappoints only in its selection of interior materials--something that's partially addressed in its ritzier Town & Country sibling. As a result, it lacks the apparent polish of top rivals like the Honda Odyssey, but is second to none in utility, versatility, and innovative, family-friendly features.
