The Avenger taxes the conventional wisdom that there are no "bad cars" these days. The R/T model is laudably available with all-wheel drive, and it doesn't feel underpowered like 4-cylinder Avengers. But its tacked-on rear spoiler somehow turns the otherwise good-looking Avenger into a juvenile show-off, a pathetic image for a car that offers so little driving satisfaction and even less value for money.
Damon Bell
On paper, the Avenger R/T may look like a good value, but it comes up woefully short in the real world. Its drivetrain and suspension refinement are subpar even by vanilla family sedan standards, let alone for a vehicle with a sport suspension, 18-inch wheels, and "Road/Track" aspirations.
Ed Piotrowski
The silky 3.5-liter V6 engine, striking lines, and available all-wheel drive are Avenger's most appealing features. Come to think of it, those are about its only appealing features. There are any number of other midsize sedans out right now that are more dynamically sound, efficient, refined, and better built than this one. Skip it.
John Biel
Despite its racy looks and 3.5-liter V-6, the Avenger R/T in this test didn't deliver nearly the "fun-to-drive" experience for which this driver hoped. Even the warm glow from buying a car at a good price fades after a while if the car disappoints.
