With stringent new fuel economy standards coming for 2020, the end of the modern muscle/supercar era is likely fast approaching. That didn't stop Chevrolet from unleashing a monster Corvette that will soon go into production--the 2009 ZR1.
The original Corvette ZR1 was produced from 1990-1995. It incorporated a 375-horsepower 5.7-liter V8 engine with design influence from British sports car maker Lotus and construction by Mercury Marine. The 2009 Corvette ZR1 has nearly double the horsepower of the original on an engine developed completely in house. Chevy estimates output at 620 horsepower from the car's supercharged 6.2-liter V8. Paired with a six-speed manual transmission, this super 'Vette should easily hit 60 mph from a stop in 3.5 seconds. Also aiding in acceleration is the liberal use of lightweight carbon fiber on the hood, roof panel, roof bow, front fascia splitter, and rocker moldings. That brings the curb weight down to a comparatively light 3350 pounds, according to GM's estimate. The suspension gets specific tuning that incorporates GM's Magnetic Ride Control. Officials say this means that the ZR1 can deliver handling performance that rivals many exotic cars, while still delivering a compliant ride for everyday driving. Only two options will be available: chrome wheels and an interior dress-up package that includes unique sport bucket seats, a navigation system, and a Bluetooth wireless cell phone link.
Full pricing and performance details should be available closer to the Corvette ZR1's official launch this summer. Given the performance and technology upgrades over the current Corvette performance champion, the Z06, figure on a substantial price premium over that model. Don't be surprised if the sticker checks in at six figures, and limited production likely will drive transaction prices even higher.
