What do you get when you cross a large German sedan, an Italian V-10 engine, and one of the best looking interiors in the business? An Audi S8. It's comfortable, agile for its size, and very well finished. The V-10 is in the background most--maybe too much--of the time, but on a country two-lane with the windows down and the sunroof open, you hear a bit of the powertrain's exotic exhaust note.

Audi's S8 projects the image of understated luxury with fluid, sophisticated exterior styling and an uber-elegant interior, all the while concealing its powerful, lightning-fast V10 sports sedan heart. The bad news is this tester's $115,000+ tag, which includes a hefty gas-guzzler tax, because guzzle it certainly does.

The S requires a big jump in base price from other members of the A8 family, and so it sits down at the high-stakes table. While costly, there is a light-on-its-feet, athletic sensibility to the S8 that in no way detracts from its luxuriousness. This combination of qualities makes it worthy of consideration among luxury-sedan buyers.

You'd think cramming a Lamborghini engine into an excellent German sedan would be the recipe for one of the world's coolest cars, but the payoff isn't here. There's no hot Italian blood coursing through this Audi's veins, just some leftover pasta carbonara. This is a fine car, no doubt, but Audi's cool, Germanic stoicism dominates the meal, with only the spicy but muted Lambo engine note reminding you why you shelled out nearly $120,000. Like pairing osso bucco with sauerkraut, you¿ll probably enjoy dinner, you just won¿t be thrilled about it.
