The A6 3.2 Avant Quattro does a lot of tasks very, very well. The interior is beautiful (and the body isn't bad either), the V6 is sweet, and the wagon body adds a welcome dose of utility. I liked this car a lot, but the sticker price is the main problem. Why does this car cost about $6000 more than our long-term 2007 Q7 did?
Tom Appel
A6 is a classy ride that somehow comes up a little short in this class. For a major chunk of less of your money, check out the likable Volvo V70/XC70 wagons. They aren't as nice as an Audi inside (almost nothing is) but they're nice enough, and feel roomier to boot.

Looking for a sport sedan with more than 400 horsepower that is completely docile in heavy traffic? Check out Audi S6.

Audi S6 is a mighty good sport sedan that has to compete against some other mighty good sport sedans, eg. the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63. The Audi occupies a nice middle ground between the all-out sport of the M5 and more opulent E63. It scores added points for being the only one in this group to have all-wheel drive making it arguably the best choice for those who have to live in a true four-season climate.

At $56,300 to start, the A6 4.2 quattro sedan is probably a pretty good deal. The S6 tacks $16K on that plus another $1300 in Gas-Guzzler tax. Thus, our test car, as optioned, was closing in on $81,000. While very pleasing to drive, it may not have been THAT amount of pleasing. At that point, the S6 is playing with the estimable likes of the Mercedes-Benz E63 and BMW M5, both of which feature at least 500 hp and 7-speed transmissions.

The S6's prodigious power and sporty moves sure put a smile on your face ... right up until you pay the pump piper for your 12 miles to the gallon at a rate of $4.50 per. But if you don't choke on the $75,000 price of entry, perhaps the car's premium-fuel habit is no cause for concern, in which case the S6 stands out as perhaps the most potent all-wheel-drive sedan you can buy.
Tom Appel
Like the Maserati Quattroporte with its Ferrari engine, S6 enjoys a borrowed powerplant, but gets it from Lamborghini. Unlike the Quattroporte, the S6 isn't especially engaging. Compared to the Maserati this enhanced A6 lacks the thrilling soundtrack, the almost nervous throttle response, and the go-kart steering response. The S6 is a pretty cool piece, but it's a detached cool, and that's a wee disappointing. Of course the S6 is AWD and costs about $30,000 less than the Maserati, but I digress.
