ACCELERATION

XC w/nav. sys. Class Average
5 7

Acceleration snappy once the turbo starts boosting, but suffers from nonlinear throttle response and turbo lag that frustrates smooth driving. No opportunity to time, but AWD provides outstanding traction for slippy-surface acceleration.

FUEL ECONOMY

XC w/nav. sys. Class Average
5 4.6

Test XCs averaged 18.7-21.2 mpg in city/highway use. Volvo recommends premium-grade fuel.

RIDE QUALITY

XC w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 6.6

XC70 subject to mild wavy-road float, but overall ride is comfortable and suspension is compliant.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

XC w/nav. sys. Class Average
5 7.2

High-riding stance means noticeable body lean in turns, but XC never feels unstable. One test model showed mild torque-steer tug in rapid takeoffs--odd for an AWD vehicle.

QUIETNESS

XC w/nav. sys. Class Average
5 6.9

Volvo's 5-cyl isn't objectionably noisy, but is louder, less pleasant to the ear than most rival V6s. Wind noise, tire drone moderate.

CONTROLS

XC w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 6.8

Gauges lack contrast in some light conditions. Dashtop navigation screen hard to read in daylight, and system's controls are on the steering wheel, inaccessible to passenger. However, navigation system doesn't incorporate audio or climate functions--a plus.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

XC w/nav. sys. Class Average
8 7.4

Occupants coddled by Volvo's usual wide, plush seats. Ample head and leg room. High front headrests block view to back and sides; rear headrests hinder over-the-shoulder vision.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

XC w/nav. sys. Class Average
5 5.4

Decent six-footer head clearance. OK foot space if front seats no more than halfway back. Short cushion lacks thigh support. Shoulder width insufficient for three grown-ups. Entry/exit average.

CARGO ROOM

XC w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 4.2

Ample and useful. Rear seat folds to make a flat, long, fairly wide deck. Optional audio system's subwoofer blocks access to under-floor spare tire.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

XC w/nav. sys. Class Average
4 6

Volvo's V70 wagon, upon which the XC70 is based, is the better all-around value, though it isn't available with all-wheel drive, which is standard on the XC70. And while the XC70's slightly raised suspension adds a degree of useful ground clearance, it detracts from cornering poise vs. the lower-riding V70. Still, the XC70 does furnish some midsize-SUV attributes without the bulk and fuel thirst.
