2007 Volkswagen Touareg Review
Touareg (TOUR-regg) adds more power and a few options for 2007. This five-passenger 4-dr wagon comes with all-wheel drive designed for severe off-roading. The V6 model has 276 hp for '07, an increase of 36 hp. The V8 model has 350 hp, up 40 hp. The V10 model's turbodiesel stays at 310 hp. All Touaregs have a 6-speed automatic transmission. Their AWD includes low-range gearing and a locking center differential; a locking rear differential is optional. ABS and an antiskid system are standard. So are front side airbags, curtain side airbags, and a sunroof. The V10's height-adjustable air suspension is optional for other models. A power liftgate and keyless entry/starting also are now available for all models. Other options include navigation system, rearview camera, and heated rear seats. Leather upholstery is optional. Touareg was developed with Porsche, which offers its own version as the Cayenne. Touareg also lends its basic design to the Audi Q7 premium large SUV.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Premium Midsize SUVs are similar in size and construction to Midsize SUVs. Most, in fact, are gilded versions of Midsize SUVs; though a few are exclusive upscale designs.

Our Best Buys include the Acura MDX, Cadillac SRX, and Lexus RX. Our Recommended picks are the Mercedes-Benz R-Class and Volvo XC90.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Acura MDX, BMW X5, Chrysler Aspen, and Lincoln MKX.
News
VW's Audi division will soon offer the Q7, basically a long-body Touareg with 3-row seating and different styling. That would seem to make a rumored stretched Touareg more than likely. We'd look for it around 2007, perhaps with standard V8. By that time, the base Touareg is expected to get a stronger 3.6-liter V6.

On a related front, VW is working on a new front-drive minivan to replace an aborted retro design patterned on the 2001 Microbus concept. Production reportedly starts sometime in 2007, leading us to forecast a 2008-model U.S. debut. The new minivan is said to have conservative "international" styling on a Euro-market VW truck platform and be sized like a standard-length Dodge Caravan. The most likely engine is the above-mentioned 3.6-liter V6, teamed with 5- or 6-speed automatic transmission. Optional AWD is likely. Standard features should include ABS, curtain side airbags, dual power-slide rear doors, and 3-row seating with middle buckets and a rear bench. Likely options will include navigation, rear DVD entertainment, and folding picnic table. More news as we get it, so keep checking back with us.
