Patience-testing acceleration and the odd center-mounted gauges aside, Yaris strikes me as an accommodating, economical, budget-priced runabout that doesn't feel cheap and benefits from Toyota's enviable reputation for reliability and resale value.

As equipped, our $12,700 test car makes sense for city dwellers who need automotive transportation but want something maneuverable and fuel efficient, along with a new car warranty and the promise of Toyota reliability. Otherwise, look to a larger compact or possibly a one- to two-year-old used car if you require long highway legs and/or more creature comforts.

I still think any extra money spent to buy a more substantial car (Civic, Mazda 3, Cobalt, in that order) is money well spent. But the hatchback Yaris is a likable, frugal little road rat that, modestly equipped, makes some sense for the sugar-packet stealing crowd.
