2007 Toyota Sequoia Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2007 Toyota Sequoia Review
Curtain side airbags are standard instead of optional for 2007 on Toyota's American-built large SUV. Sequoia comes in SR5 and uplevel Limited models. The only powertrain teams a 273-hp V8 with a 5-speed automatic transmission. All Sequoias come with rear-wheel drive or with 4-wheel drive. The 4WD can be left engaged on dry pavement and includes low-range gearing and a locking center differential. All Sequoias have ABS and traction/antiskid control. Standard seating is for eight. Limiteds seat seven with optional 2nd-row buckets and center console. Now standard are front side airbags and curtain side airbags that cover the 1st and 2nd seating rows and include rollover deployment. SR5 is available with load-leveling suspension, Limited with selectable rear height control. Options include a navigation system and DVD entertainment.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Large SUVs are traditionally workhorse seven-plus passenger wagons with brawny truck-type chassis, ample towing ability, lots of cargo space, and generally poor fuel economy. These vehicles offer towing and payload ratings similar to large pickup trucks.

Our Best Buys include Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, and GMC Yukon and Denali. Our Recommended pick is the Ford Expedition.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Denali, and Ford Expedition.
News
A redesigned Sequoia is still on for model-year 2008. No word yet on timing, but we'd expect at least an auto-show preview this winter. Predictably, the new model borrows much from Toyota's clean-sheet '07 Tundra large pickups, including powertrains and general appearance, and is said to match the Chevrolet Tahoe in size. Toyota is reportedly worried its new large SUV may be too large for a market now so jittery about fuel prices. But the redesigned Tahoe and its '07 General Motors siblings have sold pretty well so far, so Toyota's concerns may prove unfounded. We'll know soon enough.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

2WD SR5 4WD SR5 4WD Limited 4WD Limited w/navigation system Class Average
6 6 6 6 5.8

Plenty of power from any speed. Test 4WD SR5 did a brisk 7.9 sec 0-60 mph. Silky engine well-matched to smooth transmission. Maximum towing weight is 6500 lb.
Fuel Economy

2WD SR5 4WD SR5 4WD Limited 4WD Limited w/navigation system Class Average
3 3 3 3 2.7

Class-typical thirsty: Test 4WD Sequoias averaged 13.7-15.6 mpg. No opportunity yet to measure with 2WD versions, but they likely won't do significantly better. Sequoia uses regular-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

2WD SR5 4WD SR5 4WD Limited 4WD Limited w/navigation system Class Average
5 5 5 5 6.4

Long wheelbase, lots of weight make for mostly easy ride, and suspension copes well with really rough stuff. But even small stuff can register with surprising clarity, and wavy surfaces can prompt some sloppy body motions.
Steering/Handling/Braking

2WD SR5 4WD SR5 4WD Limited 4WD Limited w/navigation system Class Average
3 3 3 3 3.7

Few vices. Stable in fast turns, despite marked body lean, but no fun on twisty roads. A large turning radius hurts low-speed maneuverability. Simulated emergency stops are short and true, but brake pedal action slightly spongy.
Quietness

2WD SR5 4WD SR5 4WD Limited 4WD Limited w/navigation system Class Average
6 6 6 6 6.5

One of the more-refined big SUVs, with little engine noise, reasonably low coarse-surface tire drone and--for a blocky wagon--modest wind rush.
Controls

2WD SR5 4WD SR5 4WD Limited 4WD Limited w/navigation system Class Average
7 7 7 6 6.4

Clear gauges. Large, well-labeled controls, but those for climate and audio systems a fair stretch for driver. Navigation system absorbs audio controls, requires familiarization; screen difficult to read in bright light. Materials and workmanship pleasing, but SR5 interior looks plain; optional leather upholstery that's standard on Limited dresses it up.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

2WD SR5 4WD SR5 4WD Limited 4WD Limited w/navigation system Class Average
7 7 7 7 8.7

Only adequate six-footer head clearance, but leg room bountiful. Comfortable seats have long cushions. High ground clearance strains getting in and out even for long-legged occupants, and available running-board steps too narrow to be of much help. Visibility commanding to front and sides, poor to rear in close quarters.
Room/Comfort (rear)

2WD SR5 4WD SR5 4WD Limited 4WD Limited w/navigation system Class Average
7 7 7 7 7.7

Two adults have plenty of space in 2nd row, but middle passenger's foot room restricted by front console, large driveline hump. Entry/exit again awkward. Second-row seats tumble forward for good access to 3rd row. Both rows of seats are split, 3rd row slides fore/aft. Third-row seats have low cushions, are best left to two preteens or toddlers--though even they may find knee and toe room tight.
Cargo Room

2WD SR5 4WD SR5 4WD Limited 4WD Limited w/navigation system Class Average
9 9 9 9 8.6

Not much behind 3rd-row seat for a vehicle this large, but ample volume with seat folded or removed, still more with 2nd-row seat stowed. Liftgate has handy power window. Cabin has lots of bins, pockets, and cupholders.
Value within Class

2WD SR5 4WD SR5 4WD Limited 4WD Limited w/navigation system Class Average
5 7 6 5 7.6

Sequoia suffers the usual big-SUV vices of indifferent handling and heavy fuel thirst, but it's refined and well-equipped. Still, domestic-brand rivals better it in many ways while typically towing more than Sequoia's 6500-lb maximum. They usually carry bigger price discounts, too.

Price note: Prices are for vehicles distributed by Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. The dealer invoice and destination charge may be higher in areas served by independent distributors.
Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Toyota Sequoia 4-door wagon
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
