ACCELERATION
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Sport, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 3 | 4 | 3.4 |
Acceptable with manual transmission as long as you shift frequently. Pokey with automatic, which noticeably saps power. Either way, plan ahead for freeway merging, passing on busy two-lane roads.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Sport, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 5 | 6 | 7 |
Extended-use base with manual transmission averaging 24.4 mpg over first 7076 miles. Test automatic averaged an underachieving 20.7 mpg. SX4 uses regular-grade fuel.
RIDE QUALITY
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Sport, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6 | 5 |
Comfortable for a small, relatively light car. Limber but nicely damped suspension and sensibly sized tires iron out most rough pavement.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Sport, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 5 | 5.1 |
SX4's AWD front/rear power lock deactivates above 36 mph. SX4 thus mostly behaves like a front-wheel-drive car. It corners with a stable feel, modest apparent body lean. Steering quick, nicely weighted. Firm, progressive brake pedal action.
QUIETNESS
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Sport, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 |
Class-average at best. Engine fairly loud at high rpm, remains audible even in gentle cruising. Wind noise modest, but wagon's open rear area and budget-level sound insulation do little to mask coarse-surface tire thrum.
CONTROLS
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Sport, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6 | 5.7 |
Conventional but attractive dashboard design provides large, legible gauges and simple, handy minor controls. Automatic-transmission models have gear-position indicator in gauge cluster, a nice touch. Cabin uses good-quality materials for this price level, has exemplary detail finish.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Sport, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6 | 5.4 |
Generous head and leg room. But seats ordinary for shape and padding, and lack height adjustment. Angle and thickness of front roof pillars partially obstructs view to corners.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Sport, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4 | 3.7 |
Better than expected for this class. Good toe space, with adequate knee and leg room, even with the front seats moved far back. Head clearance OK for six-footers, but squeezes taller folk.
CARGO ROOM
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Sport, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6 | 4.5 |
Room behind rear seat for a half-dozen grocery bags or a few medium-sized duffels. Rear-seat headrests don't need removing, but seat sections won't tumble fully forward without a front seat well forward, too. With split rear seat folded, cargo volume is 38.1 cu ft--quite good given SX4's modest overall length. Cabin storage useful but not abundant.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Sport, man. | Class Average |

| 8 | 7 | 9 | 7.2 |
SX4 doesn't impress for acceleration or fuel economy. Count among this subcompact wagon's attributes a solid feel, standard all-wheel-drive traction, laudable standard safety features, and impressive passenger and cargo room. Aggressive pricing rounds out this Recommended pick's appeal.
