2007 Suzuki Aerio Full Review
Date Published: 2/20/08
2007 Suzuki Aerio Review
Suzuki's smallest car drops its hatchback body style, leaving a 4-dr sedan in base and Premium trims. All Aerios have a 155-hp 4-cyl engine. Base models are available with manual or automatic transmission. Premiums are automatic only. Automatic-transmission models are available with all-wheel drive. ABS and front side airbags are standard. Curtain side airbags are unavailable. All Aerios include air conditioning, power windows/locks/mirrors, tilt steering wheel, and split folding rear seats. Premiums add power heated mirrors and alloy wheels.

Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. The subcompact class is made up of the smallest hatchbacks, sedans, and wagons on the market. These are generally considered economy cars.

Our Best Buys include the Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio. Our Recommended picks are the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Hyundai Accent, Honda Fit and Suzuki SX4.
News
Aerio soldiers on for another model year as a sedan only, with Suzuki's new SX4 taking the place of the now-discontinued Aerio SX hatchback. There's been no confirmation on what may replace this perennial slow seller. Rumors abound about Suzuki's new Swift making its way to U.S. shores in the 2008-2009 timeframe. Last seen in the U.S. in 1994, the new model would be sized to compete with the likes of the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris. Keep it locked right here for updates.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Base sdn, man. Class Average
4 3.4

Front-drive Aerios with manual transmission feel quite lively, but shift action isn't the smoothest. No opportunity to test with automatic transmission or AWD.
Fuel Economy

Base sdn, man. Class Average
7 7

Test Aerios with manual transmission averaged 24.3-27.4 mpg. Aerio uses regular-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

Base sdn, man. Class Average
4 5

Generally stable at highway speeds, though gusty crosswinds can cause mild wander. Tar strips, smaller bumps absorbed surprisingly well, but larger bumps can pound through, causing jiggle and bounce.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base sdn, man. Class Average
5 5.1

Quick steering. Good grip in turns, but aggressive cornering induces more-than-moderate body lean. Tidy size, tight turning circle help in close quarters.
Quietness

Base sdn, man. Class Average
4 3.9

Wind, road noise intrude at even moderate speeds, and rough surfaces can induce tinny body drumming. Engine coarse, loud at full throttle.
Controls

Base sdn, man. Class Average
6 5.7

Gauges clearly marked, easy to read. High-mounted radio and climate controls simple to reach and adjust. Automatic climate control is standard--an unusual amenity in this price range. Solid cabin materials also impress for the price.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base sdn, man. Class Average
6 5.4

Plenty of head room with standard height-adjustable driver seat, but tall drivers may wish for more rearward seat travel. Firm, supportive seats mount high, help ease entry/exit. Tall build, lowish dashtop combine for commanding forward view, but thick rear pillars impede over-the-shoulder visibility.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base sdn, man. Class Average
4 3.7

Quite good for the exterior size. Head room limited for passengers taller than 5-ft-9. Good knee clearance, doesn't feel tight unless front seats are pushed far back. Large doors ease entry/exit.
Cargo Room

Base sdn, man. Class Average
4 4.6

Tall trunk is large for the class, but doesn't go far forward. Note that AWD trims cargo volume by 3.1 cu ft. All Aerios have split rear seatbacks that fold easily and lay flat once headrests are removed and seat bottoms flipped forward. Handy bins contribute to good interior storage.
Value within Class

Base sdn, man. Class Average
5 7.1

Aerio is not as sporty or refined as top-rated rivals. But these small sedans excel as efficient, low-price commuter cars, and they are among the few in this class to offer the all-weather traction of all-wheel drive.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
