2007 Suzuki SX4 Review
This subcompact all-wheel-drive wagon replaces Suzuki's Aerio SX hatchback for 2007. SX4 is offered in Base and Sport trims. Both use a 143-hp 4-cyl engine and a 5-speed manual transmission or optional 4-speed automatic. The AWD lacks low-range gearing, but can be set for front drive only, for AWD, and for a locked-in 50/50 front/rear power split. ABS is standard. Sports add traction/antiskid control. SX4s come with front side airbags, curtain side airbags, and a 60/40 split folding rear seat. Sports have automatic climate control, keyless entry/starting, cruise control, and heated door mirrors.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. The subcompact class is made up of the smallest hatchbacks, sedans, and wagons on the market. These are generally considered economy cars.

Our Best Buys include the Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio. Our Recommended picks are the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Hyundai Accent, Honda Fit and Suzuki SX4.
News
An SX4 sedan is set to bow this fall, pricing and equipment to be announced. It uses the same wheelbase as the hatchbacks, but stands 14 inches longer (at 176.8), 2.4 inches lower and an inch narrower. Powerteams are also shared, which will likely make this Suzuki the lowest priced all-wheel-drive sedan in North America. Taken together, the SX4 sedan and hatchback look like they're ousting the older Aerio sedan for 2008.

Meantime, Suzuki has cooked up a racing hatchback SX4 for the World Rally Championship, plus a more-practical street version. This "WRC" seems aimed at pocket-rockets like Subaru's Impreza WRX, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, and the MazdaSpeed 3. No word on whether Suzuki will sell it here. A lot depends on sales of the workaday hatchbacks, and they've been modest so far.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Base, man. Base, auto. Sport, man. Class Average
4 3 4 3.4

Acceptable with manual transmission as long as you shift frequently. Pokey with automatic, which noticeably saps power. Either way, plan ahead for freeway merging, passing on busy two-lane roads.
Fuel Economy

Base, man. Base, auto. Sport, man. Class Average
6 5 6 7

Extended-use base with manual transmission averaging 24.4 mpg over first 7076 miles. Test automatic averaged an underachieving 20.7 mpg. SX4 uses regular-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

Base, man. Base, auto. Sport, man. Class Average
6 6 6 5

Comfortable for a small, relatively light car. Limber but nicely damped suspension and sensibly sized tires iron out most rough pavement.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base, man. Base, auto. Sport, man. Class Average
5 5 5 5.1

SX4's AWD front/rear power lock deactivates above 36 mph. SX4 thus mostly behaves like a front-wheel-drive car. It corners with a stable feel, modest apparent body lean. Steering quick, nicely weighted. Firm, progressive brake pedal action.
Quietness

Base, man. Base, auto. Sport, man. Class Average
4 4 4 3.9

Class-average at best. Engine fairly loud at high rpm, remains audible even in gentle cruising. Wind noise modest, but wagon's open rear area and budget-level sound insulation do little to mask coarse-surface tire thrum.
Controls

Base, man. Base, auto. Sport, man. Class Average
6 6 6 5.7

Conventional but attractive dashboard design provides large, legible gauges and simple, handy minor controls. Automatic-transmission models have gear-position indicator in gauge cluster, a nice touch. Cabin uses good-quality materials for this price level, has exemplary detail finish.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base, man. Base, auto. Sport, man. Class Average
6 6 6 5.4

Generous head and leg room. But seats ordinary for shape and padding, and lack height adjustment. Angle and thickness of front roof pillars partially obstructs view to corners.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base, man. Base, auto. Sport, man. Class Average
4 4 4 3.7

Better than expected for this class. Good toe space, with adequate knee and leg room, even with the front seats moved far back. Head clearance OK for six-footers, but squeezes taller folk.
Cargo Room

Base, man. Base, auto. Sport, man. Class Average
6 6 6 4.6

Room behind rear seat for a half-dozen grocery bags or a few medium-sized duffels. Rear-seat headrests don't need removing, but seat sections won't tumble fully forward without a front seat well forward, too. With split rear seat folded, cargo volume is 38.1 cu ft--quite good given SX4's modest overall length. Cabin storage useful but not abundant.
Value within Class

Base, man. Base, auto. Sport, man. Class Average
8 7 9 7.1

SX4 doesn't impress for acceleration or fuel economy. Count among this subcompact wagon's attributes a solid feel, standard all-wheel-drive traction, laudable standard safety features, and impressive passenger and cargo room. Aggressive pricing rounds out this Recommended pick's appeal.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Suzuki SX4 4-door hatchback
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.

From The Back Seat
Chuck Giametta As a roomy, subcompact wagon with a "crossover" feel, the SX4's natural rival is the Honda Fit. SX4s run some $1000 more than Fit counterparts, but for that, Suzuki provides all-wheel drive, more horsepower, and arguably a more substantial-feeling structure. Both cars suffer more engine ruckus than many people would want to live with. And Fit wins on cargo space, handling, and resale value. Both are attractive buys in their own right, but the real significance here is that a Suzuki holds its own in an argument with a Honda.

Damon Bell If all-wheel drive is at the top of your list of desired subcompact features, the SX4 is for you. It's a pleasant-enough car, but I am disappointed in the SX4's EPA mpg ratings, which are up to 10 mpg worse than other vehicles in the class.

David Hogan A not unpleasing vehicle for less than $16K, but there are certainly more refined alternatives.

Ed Piotrowski SX4 succeeds by delivering good passenger and cargo space, standard all-wheel drive, and lots of other standard features for the money. Regrettably, it falls short in terms of fuel economy, which is the one area that matters most to buyers of small cars.

Jennifer Geiger I spent over 560 miles in this car and no one knew what it was. That's a shame because SX4 is a great, affordable subcompact car that deserves to be looked at by the youngish, city crowd for its compact styling, ample interior room, and available AWD. Normally I'm disappointed by its gas mileage, but I averaged 29.1 mpg on this trip--not bad.

John Biel For a little less money than our long-term Honda Fit Sport, this SX4 offers a larger and more powerful engine that still delivers good economy numbers, more total cargo and rear-seat room, all-wheel-drive capability, and interior materials that are about equal without (yet, at least) the rattles cropping up in the Honda. Sounds like a deal to this driver . . .

Matt Jaster SX4 produces a great ride for its price with plenty of safety features and solid steering. Not so great is the cargo capacity and room comfort, but a college student would be happy to tool around in one, I'm sure.

Rick Cotta The more I drive the SX4, the more I like it--particularly after averaging nearly 30 mpg on a highway trip.

Sikora Don SX4 is fun to drive, looks like it's well built, and the price is definitely attractive. The gas tank is way too small though, and combined with disappointing fuel economy you'll be visiting the gas station VERY often.

Sikora Don The SX4 is a great little runabout. You get standard all-wheel drive, it is very easy to drive, the interior is roomier than you'd think, and it is assembled quite well. The down sides are the gearing in the 5-speed manual transmission that leaves the engine revving on the expressway, the small gas tank, and the disappointing for its class gas mileage. Shopping for a subcompact? Give Suzuki SX4 a look.

Tom Appel What's not to like? The spunky SX4 seats four adults in relative comfort, has better than adequate power, is fun to drive, and boasts a fairly sophisticated AWD system for $15,000. For the SUV intender on a budget, your vehicle has arrived. Note however that our average observed 24 mpg trails most vehicles in the subcompact car class.

Tom Appel SX4 is the little buddy that never let's you down. Fun to drive, easy on the pocket book (you know, because a lot of guys carry pocket books), and packed with safety features, SX4 is a must see for econ-class shoppers.
