2007 Subaru Forester Review
This car-type compact SUV comes with all-wheel drive and a horizontally opposed 4-cyl engine. Forester offers four trim levels: 2.5 X, 2.5 X with Premium Package, 2.5 X L.L. Bean, and 2.5 XT Limited. The 2.5 XT is turbocharged and has 224 hp. The other models have 173 hp. All but the L.L. Bean come with manual transmission, which includes a hill-holder feature to prevent rolling back on inclines. Standard on the L.L. Bean and optional on the others is a 4-speed automatic. Forester's AWD system does not include low-range gearing. Antilock brakes are standard; all but the 2.5 X have 4-wheel disc brakes. Front side airbags designed to protect the head and torso are standard; curtain side airbags are unavailable. The L.L Bean has a load-leveling suspension and leather-and-suede upholstery. The XT has leather upholstery, and for '07 gets 17-inch wheels vs. the other Foresters' 16s. All get a port for digital audio players as standard.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Among utility vehicles, Compact SUVs are typically the least costly and offer the best fuel economy. Most utilize a car-type chassis and are not designed for heavy-duty, off-road use. Nearly all are five-passenger vehicles.

Our Best Buys include the Honda CR-V and Suzuki Grand Vitara. Our Recommended picks are the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, and Toyota RAV4.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Acura RDX, Honda CR-V, Jeep Compass, Jeep Patriot, Jeep Wrangler, and Mitsubishi Outlander.
News
The latest line on Forester mentions a full redesign for 2009, not '08 as previously thought, though the parent Impreza will be all-new for 2008. The makeover should produce a somewhat larger SUV without changing its basic concept.
