2007 Saturn Relay Full Review
Date Published: 4/09/08
2007 Saturn Relay Review
Saturn's minivans get a new base model and a more-powerful engine for 2007. Relay shares its basic front-wheel-drive design with the Buick Terraza and Chevrolet Uplander. Relay is not available with all-wheel drive or a load-leveling suspension for 2007. These minivans seat seven via 2nd-row bucket seats that fold and remove, and a 50/50 3rd-row bench that folds atop the cargo floor. Relay "2" and "3" trims are joined for '07 by the price-leader "1". A 240-hp 3.9-liter V6 engine replaces a 201-hp 3.5 V6 as the only engine. A 4-speed automatic remains the sole transmission. ABS and traction/antiskid control are standard. Front side airbags are standard on Relay 3, optional on 1 and 2. Side airbags for 2nd-row passengers are optional for 3, unavailable on other Relays. All the side airbags provide head and torso protection. Curtain side airbags are unavailable. Power operation for one or both sliding side doors is standard or optional, depending on model. DVD entertainment is standard on 2 and 3. Rear obstacle detection is also available. Relay's performance and accommodations mirror those of similarly equipped Uplanders.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Long the choice as a family hauler, Minivans are easily the smartest use of space for passengers and cargo. These vehicles offer a fantastic blend of comfort, convenience, and safety features for the modern family.

Our Best Buy is the Honda Odyssey. Our Recommended picks are the Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Caravan, Hyundai Entourage, Kia Sedona, and Toyota Sienna.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Hyundai Entourage and Nissan Quest.
News
Relay is expected to fade out during model-year 2008, a victim of very slow sales. A replacement is rumored as a 2009 or 2010 model, though apparently not yet approved. Assuming it is, it would share the new GM Lambda platform with Saturn's 2007 Outlook crossover SUV, but differ in styling and perhaps mechanical features.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Relay 2 Relay 3 Class Average
3 3 4.8

No opportunity yet to test with 3.9 V6. GM said 3.5 V6 models did 10.5 sec 0-60 mph. Those models felt quicker in our test and compared well with most rivals.
Fuel Economy

Relay 2 Relay 3 Class Average
4 4 4.1

No opportunity to measure.
Ride Quality

Relay 2 Relay 3 Class Average
6 6 6

Most bumps easily absorbed. Highway ride comfortable. A load-leveling suspension is only available on Terraza, which helps stabilize the vehicle when carrying lots of cargo or passengers.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Relay 2 Relay 3 Class Average
4 4 4.7

Midpack among minivans. Steering somewhat vague at highway speeds. Marked body lean in turns, but no tippy feel. Braking controlled, progressive.
Quietness

Relay 2 Relay 3 Class Average
6 6 5.9

Side mirrors generate noticeable wind noise at highway speeds. Engine well-muffled. Tire thrum more marked than in Terraza, but still impressively low up front. Road noise more apparent in 2nd and 3rd rows--enough that passengers might have a hard time hearing those up front.
Controls

Relay 2 Relay 3 Class Average
6 6 6.2

Gauges clear, minor controls simple and handy. Interior decor shows upscale flair, but is let down in places by budget-grade plastics. Standard DVD entertainment on Relay 2 and 3 a plus for family peace on longer trips.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Relay 2 Relay 3 Class Average
6 6 6.9

Low step-in makes climbing aboard a simple matter. Generous head and leg room. Fine outward visibility, helped by large mirrors.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Relay 2 Relay 3 Class Average
6 6 6.9

Good head and leg room in both cabins, but narrow space between 2nd-row buckets makes 3rd-row access harder than in some rivals. Second-row seats fold up better with standard cloth upholstery than with available leather; either way, resetting driver-side seat requires awkward reach over backrest. Third-row seats too low for best adult comfort, but fine for kids.
Cargo Room

Relay 2 Relay 3 Class Average
10 10 10

Second-row buckets don't stow in floor, but are light enough for easy removal. All rear seats fold level with a 4-inch-high cargo-area convenience tray to form a flat load deck. Available cargo organizer keeps groceries and other small items in place, but GM's minivans have less room behind the 3rd-row seat than rivals with a hideaway seatwell.
Value within Class

Relay 2 Relay 3 Class Average
5 5 6.3

Most of Relay's rivals offer more rear-seat room and cargo-carrying convenience as well as the safety of curtain side airbags. But fair prices and a comfortable ride make this Saturn a worthwhile option for value-conscious buyers.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
