2007 Saturn Aura Review
A hybrid model is a midyear addition to the 2007 Saturn Aura lineup. Aura bowed for 2007 as the first Saturn midsize car since the slow-selling 2000-2004 L-Series. Aura shares its basic design with the Chevrolet Malibu and the Pontiac G6. XE, uplevel XR, and hybrid Green Line models are offered. XE and XR have V6s of 224 and 252 horsepower, respectively. The Green Line teams a 4-cylinder gas engine with a battery powered electric motor for 164 hp. All models include ABS and traction control. An antiskid system is standard on XR and Green Line, unavailable on XE. Front side airbags and curtain side airbags are standard. So is OnStar assistance. Options include leather upholstery, power-adjustable pedals, sunroof, and a "panoramic" sunroof with a tilt-up front section and three rear-sliding panels.
News
Aura sedans use GM's current Epsilon architecture, already several years old. A redesigned Epsilon II platform will be used for Aura station wagons slated as 2009 or 2010 models. Sedans will eventually adopt that structure, too. Sources say the wagons will be built in Europe by GM's Opel subsidiary.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

XE XR XR with Panoramic roof Green Line Class Average
6 7 7 4 5.9

XE delivers reasonably brisk takeoffs and decent highway passing punch. XR models livelier in all situations; our test example reached 60 mph from a stop in an impressive 6.5 seconds. Aura automatic transmissions commendably smooth and responsive.

Hybrid Green Line is significantly slower than other Auras, but copes reasonably well with traffic. Hybrid system is almost imperceptible in operation.
Fuel Economy

XE XR XR with Panoramic roof Green Line Class Average
5 5 5 7 5.1

Test XRs averaged 20.4-21.8 mpg in routine driving, 26.3 with more highway use. No opportunity yet to measure with XE. Green Lines averaged 24.2-27.9 mpg. All engines use regular-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

XE XR XR with Panoramic roof Green Line Class Average
6 6 6 7 6.1

Little difference in suspension tuning between XE, XR, and Green Line. All have firm but agreeable ride. Body control generally good, though our testers noted some jiggle and body drumming on rippled surfaces. Green Line rides on the smallest wheels and has the most comfortable ride of the three.
Steering/Handling/Braking

XE XR XR with Panoramic roof Green Line Class Average
7 7 7 6 6.2

Near sports sedan agility. Always feels balanced and well-planted. Modest cornering lean and good grip. Green Line, with smaller tires, has slightly less grip than XE and XR. Steering has quick response, but not all testers pleased with weighting and road feel. XR and Green Line's standard antiskid system a safety plus; Saturn should offer it on the XE as well. Strong, stable braking marred by oddly dull and heavy pedal action.
Quietness

XE XR XR with Panoramic roof Green Line Class Average
6 6 6 5 6.2

Main demerit here is marked coarse-surface tire thrum. Also, moderate wind rush at highway speeds. V6 engines sound pleasant enough, though neither is as smooth as class leaders. Green Line's four-cylinder has to work hard to keep up with traffic, and is generally more intrusive.
Controls

XE XR XR with Panoramic roof Green Line Class Average
6 6 6 6 6.7

Gauges are large and legible. Controls are mostly handy and intuitive, though some testers find steering-wheel controls a bit small for easy use. Aura's cabin pleases with soft-touch surfaces and quality materials, but test cars suffered assembly flaws that disappointed.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

XE XR XR with Panoramic roof Green Line Class Average
7 7 7 7 6.8

Good six-footer headroom. Long seat tracks cater to even the lankiest riders. Optional power-adjustable pedals are a plus for shorter drivers. Impressive Panoramic roof doesn't cut perceptibly into front headroom though the available conventional sunroof does. Aura's seats are firm and well-padded, but some testers want more support in aggressive cornering. Visibility just OK dead astern and to right-rear, no problem otherwise.
Room/Comfort (rear)

XE XR XR with Panoramic roof Green Line Class Average
6 6 6 6 5.1

Legroom ample even with front seats well back, and three grown-ups should not complain on shorter trips. Headroom good for medium-height adults--but only without sunroof; clearance slim beneath housing for regular sunroof, even tighter with Panoramic roof. Six-footers must duck to clear sloping roofline when entering or exiting, though wide door openings ease things somewhat.
Cargo Room

XE XR XR with Panoramic roof Green Line Class Average
5 5 5 3 4.8

Aura's trunk is class-average for volume and aperture size, but is usefully shaped and has non-intruding decklid hinges. The standard split folding rear seat is a boon for versatility. Aura's Cabin has adequate small-item storage.
Value within Class

XE XR XR with Panoramic roof Green Line Class Average
7 8 7 8 6.3

This impressive new midsize sedan is a Consumer Guide Recommended pick. Aura shines for its sporty road manners, comfortably controlled ride, and mechanical polish. It's also roomy and comfortable, feels solid, and offers a lot for the money, including essential standard safety features. A final plus: Saturn's strong reputation for customer satisfaction.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Saturn Aura 4-door sedan
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.

From The Back Seat
Kirk Bell With GM's excellent 3.6-liter V6, leather, power-adjustable pedals, and a host of other features, our Aura XR tester is smartly priced at just under $27K. Given the value proposition, I don't have a problem recommending this car, but with the caveat that shoppers should try the ride before they buy.

Tom Appel I was expecting a home run from Saturn's new midsize sedan, but welcome a standing double. Aura XR works well as a sporty sedan with perhaps the most usable power in its class. The ride is sub par however, with too much crashing over the rough stuff. Inside Aura is fine, but I would have liked to have seen Saturn's biggest-ever car really shine here. Still, at less than $27,000 Aura has the performance, goodies, and value to merit serious consideration in this crowded class.

From The Back Seat
Chuck Giametta A stylish sedan that's also attractive for its pricing and environmental benefits, the Aura Green Line proves General Motors is quite capable of smart, contemporary car design. Our test model's fuel-economy average in the mid-20-mpg range, however, isn't compelling enough on its own to push the Green Line ahead of the faster and less-expensive XE model on the Aura scale of value.

Ed Piotrowski Having spent a morning and evening rush with the Aura Green Line, this car comes off slightly less impressive than during a previous, very brief, preview test drive. This car shudders a bit when transitioning between engine stop and start. The electric motor doesn't provide as much benefit to acceleration as expected either. These complaints are largely overshadowed by this car's price, which with a decent load of equipment, tops out at just a shade over $23,000. Add in a federal tax credit at time of purchase, and Aura Green Line is a pretty compelling value.

Jack Stewart Aura Green Line is reasonably priced. This hybrid's fuel-economy savings will go in the buyer's pocket instead of extra car payments. The car is also roomy and fun to drive.

John Biel This driver has tested hybrids that may have gotten a little better mileage than this one, but some weren't as roomy, comfortable, or nicely equipped as this one. This is a comfortable family car with the bonus of "green consciousness" for those to whom that matters--and at a good price. This is a car deserving of the attentions of shoppers in the intermediate field.

Matt Jaster Saturn's Aura Green Line proves the company is heading in the right direction for fuel economy and performance. The Aura stands out in Saturn's revamped line-up and will most likely continue to do so with future models.

Rick Cotta An impressive level of equipment and interior materials, ample room, decent dynamics, and 30-mpg economy combine to make the $23,000 Aura Green Line a bargain in my book. Some might find it a bit underpowered, but this is one hybrid I don't hesitate to recommend.
