2007 Saab 9-7X Review
Saab's SUV gets no changes of note for 2007. General Motors owns Saab, and 9-7X shares its truck-type platform with the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy. The 9-7X has a Saab-style dashboard and styling cues, as well as the Swedish brand's traditional center-console-mounted ignition switch. Other differences include 9-7X specific suspension, steering, and brakes. It seats five and has all-wheel drive without low-range gearing. Powertrains are from GM: a 290-hp 6-cyl or 300-hp V8. The V8 has GM's Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation. A 4-speed automatic is the sole transmission. ABS, antiskid system, and load-leveling suspension are standard. So are curtain side airbags with rollover deployment. Power-adjustable pedals and xenon headlights are standard on the V8, available on the 6-cyl. A navigation system is optional.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Premium Midsize SUVs are similar in size and construction to Midsize SUVs. Most, in fact, are gilded versions of Midsize SUVs; though a few are exclusive upscale designs.

Our Best Buys include the Acura MDX, Cadillac SRX, and Lexus RX. Our Recommended picks are the Mercedes-Benz R-Class and Volvo XC90.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Acura MDX, BMW X5, Chrysler Aspen, and Lincoln MKX.
News
The first--and so far only--American-built Saab dies with the 2007 model year. The 9-7X is a victim of withering demand for truck-type SUVs in general and this General Motors design in particular.

Saab reportedly gets a new SUV for model-year 2009, but it's to be a car-type midsize crossover blending elements of GM's Theta models (Chevrolet Equinox/Pontiac Torrent/Saturn Vue) and the company's new Epsilon 2 global car platform. If this rumor proves true, the resulting "9-4X" would offer front drive and available all-wheel drive linked to a GM-designed V6--probably the corporate 3.6-liter "high feature" unit--and a 6-speed automatic transmission.
