Vehicle Highlights
Pontiac's best-selling car gets some new and more-powerful engines for 2007. G6 shares its basic architecture with the Chevrolet Malibu, Saturn Aura, and the 9-3 from GM-owned Saab. It offers sedan, coupe, and power-retractable hardtop convertible body styles. Sedans come in price-leader 1SV and base models. Sedans and coupes also come in sporty GT and GTP trim. Convertibles are GTs.
1SV and base sedans have a 167-hp 4-cyl. GTs have a 3.5-liter V6 rated at 224 hp in sedan and coupe, 217 hp in the convertible; it had 201 hp for 2006. This V6 is optional for the base sedan. Optional for GTs is a 240-hp 3.9-liter V6 (227 hp in the convertible). For '07, GTPs trade that 3.9 for a 252-hp 3.6-liter V6. Automatic transmission is standard--a 6-speed on the GTP, a 4-speed otherwise. The 3.9 V6 is available with a 6-speed manual.
ABS and traction control are standard on GT and GTP, optional on the base, unavailable on the 1SV. GTPs and 3.9 GTs have an antiskid system. Curtain side airbags are now standard instead of optional on sedans and coupes. Front side airbags are standard on GTPs, optional on base and GT. Convertibles have front side airbags that provide head and torso protection. Available features include a "panoramic" sedan sunroof with a tilt-up front section and three rear-sliding panels.
COMPETITION
Consumer GuideĀ® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Midsize Cars represent the heart of the U.S. car market. Most are price-sensitive, conservatively designed, family oriented sedans and wagons.
Our Best Buys include Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Our Recommended picks are the Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, Mercury Milan, and Saturn Aura.
New or significantly redesigned models include the Saturn Aura.
