2007 Nissan Quest Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2007 Nissan Quest Review
A revamped interior and freshened front and rear styling highlight 2007 for Nissan's minivan. Quest offers four models: 3.5, 3.5 S, 3.5 SL, and top-line 3.5 SE. All have a 235-hp V6 and a 5-speed automatic transmission. Front bucket seats are standard. Optional on all are folding 2nd-row bucket seats and a 3rd-row bench seat that folds into floorwell. ABS, traction control, and curtain side airbags for all seating rows are standard. Also available are front side airbags and an antiskid system.

For '07, the speedometer and tachometer are relocated from the middle of the dashboard to in front of the driver. The 3rd-row bench seat has been redesigned, and additional sound insulation installed. Power operation for one or both sliding side doors is available, depending on model. SL and SE are also available with 19-inch wheels that include run-flat tires. Rear obstacle detection and a power liftgate are standard on all but the base model. Other available features include a rearview camera, power-adjustable pedals, DVD entertainment, wireless cell phone link, and navigation system. A returning option is Nissan's SkyView roof that features four fixed glass panels over the 2nd- and 3rd-row seats.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Long the choice as a family hauler, Minivans are easily the smartest use of space for passengers and cargo. These vehicles offer a fantastic blend of comfort, convenience, and safety features for the modern family.

Our Best Buy is the Honda Odyssey. Our Recommended picks are the Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Caravan, Hyundai Entourage, Kia Sedona, and Toyota Sienna.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Hyundai Entourage and Nissan Quest.
News
Quest's daring 2004 redesign proved a tougher sell than Nissan expected. That's why the company reluctantly spent some $60 million for the '07 updating.

Sources say Quest's next redesign is due for 2010, but Nissan may have other plans. Indeed, the company is said to be working on a new vehicle that might replace the minivan. Aimed at aging "baby boomers," the seems to be an SUV/pickup like the Chevrolet Avalanche, but with the dimensions and carlike driving feel of a midsize crossover like Nissan's own Murano. At the moment, though, this is only a what-if idea with no introduction date. If there is a next Quest, we'd expect more conventional styling and perhaps a somewhat smaller, more fuel-efficient package.

Pros Cons
Passenger and cargo room Fuel economy
Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

3.5 SL 3.5 SE w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 6 4.8

Among the faster minivans, with fine power off the line, good merging and passing muscle. Transmission upshifts smoothly and downshifts promptly for additional passing power.
Fuel Economy

3.5 SL 3.5 SE w/nav. sys. Class Average
4 4 4.1

Averaged 20.5 mpg in mostly highway driving. Nissan recommends premium-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

3.5 SL 3.5 SE w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 6 6

Absorbs bumps well, with good body control over big moguls. Some typical minivan pitching, but overall a good balance of compliance and control. The 3.5 SE's 17-inch tires ride more harshly over sharp ridges and ruts than the other models' 16s. No opportunity to test with run-flat tires.
Steering/Handling/Braking

3.5 SL 3.5 SE w/nav. sys. Class Average
5 6 4.7

Quest is among the larger minivans, so it's less carlike to drive than some rivals. Turning radius is reduced for '07, but Quest can still feel cumbersome in close quarters. On the upside, steering is responsive and natural in feel, and Quest corners with good grip, modest body lean.
Quietness

3.5 SL 3.5 SE w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 6 5.9

Additional sound insulation for 2007 brings Quest in line with quieter minivans, such as the Toyota Sienna.
Controls

3.5 SL 3.5 SE w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 6 6.2

Dashboard no longer sacrifices function for avant garde styling. Gauges now easy to see, read. Audio, climate controls remain mounted on horizontally biased surface. They're easy to reach, but many markings are too small and their indicator lights may be subject to washing out in direct sunlight. Navigation system absorbs no audio or climate functions--a plus.
Details

3.5 SL 3.5 SE w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 6 6

Interior materials are an attractive, upscale mix of colors and textures.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

3.5 SL 3.5 SE w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 7 6.9

Tall folks may need more seat travel, but get plenty of head room. All models have height-adjustable driver seat, adjustable lumbar support. Available adjustable pedals a boon for shorter drivers. When deployed, 3rd-row headrests block view aft. Good visibility otherwise.
Room/Comfort (rear)

3.5 SL 3.5 SE w/nav. sys. Class Average
8 8 6.9

Adult-sized room in 2nd, 3rd rows. Wide door openings ease entry/exit for 3rd row, as do tilt-forward 2nd-row seats. Second-row seats slide fore/aft about 3 inches to increase 3rd-row room. Available SkyView roof, overhead console, and SE's dual-screen entertainment system are nice touches. Power windows on the sliding side doors are unavailable.
Cargo Room

3.5 SL 3.5 SE w/nav. sys. Class Average
10 10 10

Available fold-flat seats handy, and Nissan says Quest will hold a 4x8-ft. panel. But 2nd row doesn't fold quite level with floor. Third row folds flush with floor via one-handed operation, but is a one-piece bench rather than a split bench as in most competitors. Interior has numerous storage cubbies, plus available front center console.
Value within Class

3.5 SL 3.5 SE w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 5 6.3

Give Nissan credit for revamping Quest for 2007, just three model years after it was introduced. For better or worse, it's still not as mainstream a design as more popular rivals from Dodge, Honda, and Toyota. But its dashboard no longer sacrifices too much function in the name of high style, and improvements in ride comfort, quietness, and features make it more competitive in the minivan class.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
