ACCELERATION
| 2WD LS extended cab, auto. | 4WD LS Double Cab, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 5 | 5 |
The V6 engine is underpowered for anything but daily commuting and light loads. Models with the V8 have better power all around, but they still lack the expected passing punch. Towing capacity ranges from 2800 to 4350 lb.
FUEL ECONOMY
| 2WD LS extended cab, auto. | 4WD LS Double Cab, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 3 | 3.7 |
Test 4WD Double Cab V8 averaged 14.4 mpg. Mitsubishi recommends regular-grade fuel.
RIDE QUALITY
| 2WD LS extended cab, auto. | 4WD LS Double Cab, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 4.6 |
Raiders are surprisingly smooth and composed in any configuration. They display little of the bounding and jiggle typically found in other pickup trucks.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| 2WD LS extended cab, auto. | 4WD LS Double Cab, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 3.9 |
The steering has a direct feel and lacks typical truck sloppiness. Body lean is evident while taking turns, but is well controlled overall for a pickup. Raider's lack of four-wheel ABS is a noteworthy and disappointing omission.
QUIETNESS
| 2WD LS extended cab, auto. | 4WD LS Double Cab, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 6 | 4.5 |
Road noise is impressively hushed. Some wind rush intrudes at highway speeds. Both engines have a refined growl while accelerating, but the V8 is quieter overall.
CONTROLS
| 2WD LS extended cab, auto. | 4WD LS Double Cab, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 5.9 |
The controls for audio and climate are logically placed and easy to access. Interior materials look and feel low grade, with hard, shiny plastic covering most surfaces.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| 2WD LS extended cab, auto. | 4WD LS Double Cab, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 5.3 |
Raider's cabin is very spacious, with plenty of head and leg room, even for tall folks. Seat comfort is also good.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| 2WD LS extended cab, auto. | 4WD LS Double Cab, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 5 | 2.9 |
Double Cabs offer three-passenger rear seating, but only two adults will fit comfortably. Head and leg room is adequate for adults under six-feet tall, but taller riders will want more leg room. Extended cabs have forward-facing jump seats, and they best suit those under 5-foot-3, as there's little leg room.
CARGO ROOM
| 2WD LS extended cab, auto. | 4WD LS Double Cab, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 5 | 4.1 |
Raider's very good interior storage is highlighted by a large center console and generously sized door pockets. Folding rear seats in both cab styles further add to this pickup's utility.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| 2WD LS extended cab, auto. | 4WD LS Double Cab, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 6 |
Raider is best suited to light-duty chores, but its large dimensions render it too big for easy daily commuting. Mitsubishi offers more generous warranty coverage than its Dodge Dakota sibling, but is hampered by a smaller dealer network and uncertain resale value. A lack of key safety equipment, including an antiskid system and curtain side airbags, makes Raider difficult to recommend.
