The Mini Cooper S always steered, gripped, and turned like a throughbred sports car, but no longer does it ride like a buckboard being pulled by a thoroughbred gone to pasture. This improvement in urban-street comfort makes all the difference. The S is now capable of serving as an everyday car, no matter the road surface. Just remember that it's a high-performance coupe, not an economy hatchback, and you'll understand how it can be darty under full throttle, yet rewarding in virtually every other circumstance to the most demanding driver.

For better or worse, the Mini Cooper S has loads of personality. In terms of interior ergonomics, there's a fine line between whimsical and annoying, and the Mini teeters right on it. The S is a car for enthusiasts who will tolerate its noise and stiff ride, and enjoy its outstanding handling and fun-to-drive character.

BMW has done an excellent job building and maintaining the Mini brand. The Cooper is reasonably priced (provided you keep a lid on the options), gets very good gas mileage, and is a blast to drive. Continued strong demand, purposely limited supply, and no incentives also translate into strong resale value. The interior is an ergonomic nightmare and the ride on the S model is almost brutally stiff. Those are trade-offs, though, that most folks can probably cope with.

Wow! was this fun to drive and surprisingly light on fuel! Excellent steering and handling response coupled with more than enough power and look-at-me styling made for a fun weekend drive both around town and on the highway (as long as I dodged the pot holes--ouch!).

By any conventional measure, the Mini leaves a lot to be desired. The rear seat is virtually uninhabitable to humans, cargo room isn't as usable as it could be, and control layout, actuation, and labeling defies ergonomic logic. But most of those faults fall to the wayside after five minutes behind the wheel. Few cars are more entertaining to drive, and not just because of its go-kart-like reflexes; items such as the steering wheel and shifter just feel right, the dash looks like a work of art, and the thin roof pillars give a wide-angle view of the world. Impressive fuel economy and Mini's strong resale value and warranty (the latter of which includes 3/36 free maintenance) make it a sound economic proposition as well, and that's a combination I'd love to put in my own garage--as long as I had something more practical parked next to it.

Tom Appel

I'm impressed by any car this small that comfortably hosts my 300-pound frame. Still, in S guise Mini is really too enthusiast oriented for most drivers. Coping with traffic means endless shifting (with the manual) and long turbo-lag delays. Plus, the ride is simply bone crushing. As a younger man this car would have thrilled me, but as a dad who commutes 50 miles a day, the Cooper S is nothing but a kid's toy.
