Vehicle Highlights

Diesel and high-performance models join the larger of Mercedes' two midsize SUVs for 2007. R-Class shares its basic structure with Mercedes' ML-Class SUV, but seats six instead of five and is 12 inches longer in wheelbase and 15 inches longer overall.

Four models are offered. The R350 has a 268-hp V6, the R500 a 302-hp V8. New for '07 are the R320 CDI with a 215-hp diesel V6, and the R63 with a 507-hp V8. All have a 7-speed automatic transmission; E63 adds manual-shift steering wheel buttons. All Rs have all-wheel drive without low-range gearing. ABS and traction/antiskid control are standard. Front side airbags, rear side airbags, and curtain side airbags that cover all three seating rows are standard. Seating is in a 2-2-2 arrangement, with folding 2nd-row buckets and a folding 50/50 split 3rd-row bench. Standard for R63, optional otherwise, are leather upholstery, navigation system, load-leveling suspension, and Mercedes Tele Aid assistance.

COMPETITION

Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Premium Midsize SUVs are similar in size and construction to Midsize SUVs. Most, in fact, are gilded versions of Midsize SUVs; though a few are exclusive upscale designs.

Our Best Buys include the Acura MDX, Cadillac SRX, and Lexus RX. Our Recommended picks are the Mercedes-Benz R-Class and Volvo XC90.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Acura MDX, BMW X5, Chrysler Aspen, and Lincoln MKX.
