2007 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Full Review
Date Published: 4/15/08
2007 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Review
Revised styling, new engines, and additional safety equipment highlight 2007 for Mercedes' midsize sedans and wagons. The E-Class line comes in rear- and all-wheel drive versions. Four models are offered. E350s have a 268-hp 3.5-liter V6. The E550 has a 382-hp V8 and replaces the 302-hp E500. The E320 Bluetec has a 208-hp V6 turbodiesel and replaces the 201-hp E320 CDI. The high-performance E63 has a 507-hp V8 and replaces the 469-hp E55.

All E-Class models are available as sedans; the E350 and E63 are also available as wagons. Mercedes' 4Matic AWD is available on E350 and E550. All rear-drive models have a 7-speed automatic transmission; E63 adds manual-shift steering wheel buttons. AWD models have a 5-speed automatic. ABS and traction/antiskid control are standard. An air suspension with driver-adjustable shock absorbers is standard on E550 and E63.

Front and rear side airbags and curtain side airbags with rollover deployment are standard. New for '07 is Mercedes' Pre-Safe system, which automatically tightens seatbelts and readies full braking power when sensors detect an imminent collision.

A no-cost option for E350 and E550 is a Sport package that includes lowered suspension, 18-inch wheels, and unique trim. Other options include steering-linked bi-xenon headlamps and adaptive cruise control. Also available: a wireless cell phone link, navigation system, heated/cooled front seats, and keyless access and starting. Rear obstacle detection is available for sedans. So is Mercedes' full-length Panorama glass roof with a power tilt/slide panel above the front seats. The E63 has sport suspension, exhaust, and seats. All '07 E-Class models get revised front and rear styling.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Premium Midsize Cars sport interior dimensions similar to Midsize Cars. Premium Midsize Cars offer more luxury, performance, and prestige when compared to Midsize Cars. This segment is one of the industry's fastest-growing categories.

Our Best Buys include the Acura TL, Infiniti M, and Lexus ES 350. Our Recommended picks are the Cadillac CTS, Infiniti G35, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Lexus GS 450h, Lincoln MKZ, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
News
The 2007 update should carry the E-Class through the next three model years, possibly four, after which a redesign takes place. Details are scant right now, but the replacement will almost surely be a bit larger and will borrow styling cues from the redesigned '07 S-Class sedans.

Acceleration

E350 sdn w/Sport Pkg. E320 Bluetec E550 w/Sport Pkg. AWD E550 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
7 7 9 9 7

E350 stately from a stop, but gathers speed quickly, has fine passing power. E320 Bluetec diesel similar, though turbo lag noticeable both from a stop and in passing maneuvers. E550 gutsier still, with no noticeable difference in acceleration between rear- and all-wheel-drive models. In all, transmission provides smooth, timely shifts, though E320 Bluetec suffers some kickdown delay. Mercedes quotes 6.5 sec 0-60 mph for E350 sedan, 6.6 for Bluetec, 5.4 for E550, 4.3 for E63.
Fuel Economy

E350 sdn w/Sport Pkg. E320 Bluetec E550 w/Sport Pkg. AWD E550 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
5 7 4 4 4.6

Test AWD E550 with Sport Package averaged 17.5 mpg. All gas engines require premium-grade fuel.

Bluetec requires ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel. Note that Bluetec is unavailable in California and certain Northeastern states.

Ride Quality

E350 sdn w/Sport Pkg. E320 Bluetec E550 w/Sport Pkg. AWD E550 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
8 10 8 8 6.6

Stable always, with an impressive blend of comfort and control. Only the sharpest bumps intrude. E550's driver-adjustable air-suspension settings affect ride quality, especially with available Sport Package: Comfort mode allows slightly more wallow than Sport 1; tire thump more noticed in Sport 2. Try before you buy.
Steering/Handling/Braking

E350 sdn w/Sport Pkg. E320 Bluetec E550 w/Sport Pkg. AWD E550 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
7 7 7 8 7.2

Any E-Class corners with grippy assurance, though some testers find models feel ponderous in fast corners. Accurate steering, excellent straightline stability. Powerful brakes deliver short stops. Sport Package models a shade more agile.
Quietness

E350 sdn w/Sport Pkg. E320 Bluetec E550 w/Sport Pkg. AWD E550 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
8 8 8 8 6.9

Wind rush well-muffled. Low, but audible, coarse-surface tire thrum, especially with Sport Package. E350 and E550 engines rise to classy full-throttle growl, are almost silent otherwise. Bluetec's diesel makes slightly different sound than gas engines, but it's little louder overall and nearly devoid of traditional diesel clatter.
Controls

E350 sdn w/Sport Pkg. E320 Bluetec E550 w/Sport Pkg. AWD E550 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
8 8 8 8 6.8

Clear gauges. Most controls illuminated, but some markings unclear, especially those for audio system. Navigation system not daunting, but still requires familiarization. Steering column stalk for cruise control can be confused with turn signal/wiper stalk. Modern, tasteful cabin decor, top-notch materials and assembly.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

E350 sdn w/Sport Pkg. E320 Bluetec E550 w/Sport Pkg. AWD E550 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
8 8 8 8 7.4

Six-footers get good head room, plenty of leg space. Seats and tilt/telescope steering wheel have ample power adjustments to tailor good driving stance. Outward visibility good, but lane changes would be easier with larger door mirrors.
Room/Comfort (rear)

E350 sdn w/Sport Pkg. E320 Bluetec E550 w/Sport Pkg. AWD E550 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
5 5 5 5 5.4

Supportive seat, but two adults the comfort maximum. Limited six-footer head room. Toe space only adequate. Leg room restricted behind tall front-seater. Narrow floor-level passages cramp entry/exit. Housing for available Panorama roof steals no more head space than housing for conventional sunroof.
Cargo Room

E350 sdn w/Sport Pkg. E320 Bluetec E550 w/Sport Pkg. AWD E550 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
5 5 5 5 4.2

Trunk isn't that tall, and lid hinges eat into space, though they're shielded to help avoid cargo damage. Available split folding rear seat unusual in this class. Average in-cabin small-item storage.
Value within Class

E350 sdn w/Sport Pkg. E320 Bluetec E550 w/Sport Pkg. AWD E550 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
8 8 8 8 6.1

Contemporary and sophisticated, rock solid and confident on the road, E-Class brims with worthwhile features and Mercedes cachet. The '07 revamp nets safety advancements, more-powerful engine choices, and driving enthusiast-friendly Sport packages. Prices are steep, but overall, these very appealing cars are easy Recommended picks.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
