2007 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Full Review
Date Published: 1/18/08
2007 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Review
Mercedes-Benz redesigns its flagship coupe for 2007, giving it fresh looks, more power, and added safety features. The '07 CL-Class is about 3 inches longer in wheelbase and overall length than the 2000-2006 generation. It shares its basic design with the Mercedes S-Class sedan. Two models are offered. The CL550 has a 382-hp V8 and 7-speed automatic transmission; it replaces the 302-hp CL500. The CL600 again has a turbocharged V12 and 5-speed automatic but now has 510 hp vs. 493. ABS, traction/antiskid control, front and rear side airbags, and curtain side airbags are standard. Newly standard is Mercedes' Pre-Safe system that tightens seat belts and applies additional braking force if sensors detect an impending collision. All CLs have Mercedes' COMAND system, which incorporates a video screen and console-mounted "joystick" knob to control audio, navigation, phone, and other functions; it also accepts voice commands. Newly standard on all CLs are rear obstacle detection and wireless cell phone link. Standard on CL600 and optional on CL550 is Mercedes' infrared Night View Assist, which projects onto an instrument panel screen a black-and-white image of objects beyond headlight range.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

CL550 Class Average
8 7.3

Only CL550 made available for testing so far. Transmission periodically tardy with downshifts, power otherwise smooth and ample. Abundant passing reserves.
Fuel Economy

CL550 Class Average
3 3.9

Test car averaged 14.8 mpg. All CL models require premium-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

CL550 Class Average
10 8.4

Firm suspension doesn't ignore bumps and ruts, but does filter out virtually all unpleasant harshness. Large moguls induce a trace of float with suspension in Comfort mode.
Steering/Handling/Braking

CL550 Class Average
8 6.8

Poised in turns, despite size and heft. Reassuringly stable at highway speeds. Available Active Body Control almost banishes cornering lean, enhances agility. Powerful brakes give short, undramatic emergency stops.
Quietness

CL550 Class Average
9 8.5

Muted, classy engine growl in rapid acceleration. Other mechanical sounds, wind and road noise are almost rumors.
Controls

CL550 Class Average
9 7.4

Major controls logically placed, easy to reach. Mercedes' COMAND system integrates less-used functions into a single rotary-knob controlled interface. With patience, COMAND becomes second nature for audio functions, but greatly complicates less-used operations. Though understated, CL cabin appointed in top-notch materials with flawless assembly quality.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

CL550 Class Average
10 8.9

Generous space on broad, supportive seats with multiple standard power adjustments. Internal fan ventilation, "massaging" air bladders, and automatic-inflating side bolsters are standard or available, but not all testers feel they enhance comfort.
Room/Comfort (rear)

CL550 Class Average
3 8

Seat is shaped only for two and cramped for even average-size adults. Entry/exit tight despite power-forward front seats.
Cargo Room

CL550 Class Average
3 5.2

Trunk not cavernous, but usefully shaped and luxuriously finished. Interior storage includes deep door pockets, multi-chambered center console, and large glovebox.
Value within Class

CL550 Class Average
4 5.7

Any CL-Class is very pricey, but they're all brimming with power, technology, and luxury. For the well-heeled shopper with little use for a rear seat, these well-crafted two doors are a wonderful indulgence.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Mercedes-Benz CL-Class 2-door coupe

Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.

From The Back Seat
Chuck Giametta 8- Of course, it's folly to attempt to justify $111,000 for a four-place automobile. But this ratings category compares it against others in the class, and no rival at this strata (BMW 6-Series, Jaguar XK-R) matches the CL 550 for room, comfort, poise, or ease of everyday use. This is a wonderful automotive accomplishment, a car that doesn't chase fashion and whose all-around greatness will not dim with the years.

Damon Bell The uber-spendy '07 CL550 bristles with some complicated luxury gadgetry that takes getting used to. However, in road manners, power, and overall refinement, it remains at the top if its rarefied class.

John Biel If you must have your sybaritic luxuries and techno toys bound in a stylish wrapper, then a CL hardtop coupe is the ticket. Materials and assembly are excellent, and the powertrain is terrific--even at "only" 382 horsepower. Rear-seat practicality isn't as good as in an S-Class sedan--obviously--but it's hardly embarrassingly skimpy, either. This is a legitimate four-passenger car that's dressed to impress as it effortlessly eats up highway miles.

Tom Appel I'm not sure I've ever done anything cool enough to justify this sort of indulgence. But if you just took the company public and your options are worth cashing in, few cars satisfy with like these big coupes. If my budget allowed for a third car in the $110,000 range, CL would be on my list.
