2007 Mazda CX-9 Review
Mazda's first seven-passenger SUV bows for 2007. Like Mazda's five-seat CX-7 SUV, CX-9 is a car-type midsize wagon. But it's larger and borrows its engine and shares some underskin design with the Edge at Ford, Mazda's corporate parent. CX-9 comes in Sport, Touring, and top-line Grand Touring models. It has a 263-hp V6 and 6-speed automatic transmission. All models are available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive that lacks low-range gearing. ABS and traction/antiskid control with rollover sensors are standard. So are front side airbags and curtain side airbags that cover all three seating rows and include rollover deployment. Seating includes folding benches; the 2nd row splits 60/40, the 3rd row 50/50. The 2nd-row seat reclines and slides fore/aft to favor passenger or cargo space. Tri-zone climate control and tilt/telescope steering wheel are standard. Tourings add leather upholstery and heated power front seats. Grand Tourings include xenon headlamps and 20-inch wheels vs. 18s. A sunroof and DVD entertainment are optional but can't be ordered together. A power liftgate and a navigation system with rearview camera are available on Touring and Grand Touring. This evaluation is based on preview test drives.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Larger than Compact SUVs, Midsize SUVs offer a mix of car- and truck-type construction, V6 and V8 power, and up to eight-passenger seating. This class also includes crossover vehicles.

Our Best Buy choice is the Honda Pilot. Our Recommended picks are the Ford Explorer and Freestyle, Mazda CX-7, Nissan Murano, and Toyota Highlander.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Dodge Nitro, Ford Edge, GMC Acadia, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mazda CX-7 and CX-9, Saturn Outlook, Suzuki XL-7, and Toyota FJ Cruiser.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

AWD Touring 2WD Grand Touring AWD Grand Touring Class Average
5 5 5 5.2

Strong from a stop, though passing power only adequate. Transmission alert, responsive, negating the need for its manual shift gate. Maximum towing capacity is 3500 lb.
Fuel Economy

AWD Touring 2WD Grand Touring AWD Grand Touring Class Average
4 4 4 4

AWD CX-9 test cars averaged 15.7-18.9 mpg. CX-9 uses regular-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

AWD Touring 2WD Grand Touring AWD Grand Touring Class Average
6 6 6 5.5

Final evaluation awaits full road test. Preview test drives show firm suspension tuning and Grand Touring models' standard 20-inch tires don't smother large bumps as well as Ford Edge. Still, any CX-9 rides pleasantly with little undue harshness.
Steering/Handling/Braking

AWD Touring 2WD Grand Touring AWD Grand Touring Class Average
6 6 6 4.5

Steering nicely weighted while cornering. Body lean well contained in fast turns. Tidy turning radius makes CX-9 easy to maneuver in tight spots. Solid braking control, though one test Grand Touring had slightly mushy pedal feel.
Quietness

AWD Touring 2WD Grand Touring AWD Grand Touring Class Average
7 7 7 5.6

Engine barely noticed while cruising and at idle, sounds refined while accelerating. Wind noise impressively low, though coarse-surface tire thrum intrudes.
Controls

AWD Touring 2WD Grand Touring AWD Grand Touring Class Average
7 7 7 6.6

Gauges wash out in direct sunlight, are otherwise easy to read. Most controls fall easily to hand. Navigation system separate from climate controls, but integrates many audio controls, complicating some simple adjustments. Interior materials very good for the price level.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

AWD Touring 2WD Grand Touring AWD Grand Touring Class Average
7 7 7 7

Ample leg room. Tall occupants may wish for more head room, even without the optional sunroof. Chair-height seating provides commanding view forward and to the side.
Room/Comfort (rear)

AWD Touring 2WD Grand Touring AWD Grand Touring Class Average
7 7 7 6.1

Adult-size head and leg room, as long as sliding/reclining 2nd-row seat in its furthest aft position. Easy access to 3rd-row seat thanks to wide door opening, sliding 2nd row. Adults will be comfortable for short trips in the 3rd row as long as 2nd-row seat is not all the way back.
Cargo Room

AWD Touring 2WD Grand Touring AWD Grand Touring Class Average
8 8 8 8

Decent space with 3rd-row seat up becomes ample with it down, and cavernous with the 2nd row folded. Third row folds flat, but 2nd row slightly raised above cargo floor, which can complicate loading of large items. Open liftgate clears six-footer heads. All doors have convenient map pockets. Small-item interior storage otherwise average.
Value within Class

AWD Touring 2WD Grand Touring AWD Grand Touring Class Average
7 6 6 5.9

CX-9 is a stylish, refined entry that adeptly balances solid driving dynamics with generous passenger and cargo room. Count among its demerits a lack of surplus highway passing punch and costly option packages that quickly inflate sticker prices. Still, this Mazda is a good choice in an increasingly crowded field of seven-seat midsize SUVs.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Mazda CX-9 4-door wagon
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.

From The Back Seat
Chuck Giametta The CX-9's suave good looks and attractive, comfortable cabin speak to a more refined sensibility than mustered by crossovers that are intentionally more "trucky." And yet, the CX-7 is clearly not a minivan, though it functions like one and drives like one. This, indeed, may be the best of both worlds.

Jennifer Geiger CX-9 can get a bit pricey but overall it's a classy, comfortable, versatile alternative to a minivan.

Matt Jaster In a market saturated with gadgets, gizmos and special effects, it's nice to know there are sport utility vehicles that act like sport utility vehicles. The CX-9 is an excellent choice for those who need a minivan without the social stigma typically attached to one. I'd still go with the Saturn Outlook first, but the CX-9 is worth a second look.
