2007 Lexus LS Review
Lexus redesigns its flagship sedan for 2007. The LS gets a long-wheelbase body style, the industry's first 8-speed automatic transmission, and a new hybrid version offered as an '08. Three models are offered. The regular-length 460 is slightly longer and wider than the 2001-2006 versions. The 460 L and hybrid 600h L add 4.8 inches of wheelbase and overall length. 460 models have a 380-hp 4.6-liter V8 and an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 600h has a 438-hp 5.0-liter V8 and a CVT. Front side airbags, curtain airbags, and front knee airbags are standard. Rear side airbags are optional. ABS, Traction/antiskid control, and steering-linked headlights are also standard. Air suspension with driver-selectable firmness is optional on 460 L, standard on 600h. A keyless entry/starting system with pocket transmitter is also standard.

Option groups include the base model's Comfort Package with heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, and rear power sunshade. The base model's Comfort Plus Package adds power rear seats, rear side airbags, and rear climate control. Available for 460 L and standard on 600h is a Rear Seat Upgrade Package that includes a cooled rear console and four-zone climate control that reacts to occupants' body temperature. Also offered on 460 L and 600h is an Executive Class Seating Package that changes the seating configuration to four passengers and adds a retractable table, DVD entertainment, and a reclining, massaging right-rear seat with a seat cushion airbag.

Optional on base, standard on 460 L and 600h is a navigation system with a rear backup camera and a wireless cell phone link. It can be ordered with a premium audio system with a 15.9 gigabyte hard drive to hold music files.

Available for 460 models and standard on 600h is Lexus's Pre-Collision Safety System. Packaged with adaptive cruise control, it automatically tightens seatbelts and readies full braking power when sensors detect an imminent collision. Also available is Lexus's Advanced Parking Guidance System, which provides hands-free parallel parking.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Premium Large Cars are top-of-the-line sedans in size and luxury. Many are manufacturer flagships and/or showcases for the newest automotive technology. Some have six-figure price tags.

Our Best Buy is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Our Recommended picks are the Audi A8 and Cadillac DTS.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Lexus LS and Volvo S80.
News
Lexus has confirmed a first-ever gas/electric LS for a 2007 debut, likely as an early '08 model. Named LS 600h L and available only in long-wheelbase form, it uses a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) in concert with a 5.0-liter gasoline V8, two electric motors and a high-capacity battery pack. Peak combined horsepower is around 430, says Lexus. Air suspension is standard on the 600h L, which also gets special trim. No word yet on price, but you can bet the largest, most luxurious hybrid car yet will not come cheaply.

Neither will the long-expected high-performance sports coupe that Lexus reportedly reveals in fall 2007 ahead of a spring 2008 U.S. debut. Details remain scant, but sources now believe a front-mounted V8 will drive the rear wheels to the tune of 500 hp. Styling should be patterned on the recent LF-A concept, with a two-seat or tight 2+2 interior package. Minimum price will likely be $100,000 for Lexus' answer to BMW's M6 models and the AMG versions of Mercedes' redesigned 2007 CL coupe.

Acceleration

Base w/nav. sys. 460 L w/Exec. Pkg. 460 L w/Touring Pkg. 600h L Class Average
8 8 8 8 7.3

Smooth, ample power at any speed. Test Base did 5.6 sec 0-60 mph. Silky automatic transmission is generally responsive, but a deep stab of the throttle is required to coax a downshift low enough for maximum acceleration. Hybrid 600h models heavier than conventional LS models, are only slightly quicker.
Fuel Economy

Base w/nav. sys. 460 L w/Exec. Pkg. 460 L w/Touring Pkg. 600h L Class Average
3 3 3 4 3.9

Test base sedan averaged 22.7 mpg in mostly highway driving, 15.1 in test that included gas-eating performance runs. One test L averaged a thirsty 13.7 mpg in mostly city driving, another 22.8 mpg in exclusively highway use. No opportunity to measure with 600h. LS requires premium-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

Base w/nav. sys. 460 L w/Exec. Pkg. 460 L w/Touring Pkg. 600h L Class Average
9 9 9 9 8.4

Base suspension pillowy on most surfaces with noticeable highway float. Available air suspension's Sport setting induces some body jiggle.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base w/nav. sys. 460 L w/Exec. Pkg. 460 L w/Touring Pkg. 600h L Class Average
6 6 6 6 6.8

Steering is light though direct, and turning circle is impressively tight. LS is no sport sedan, however. Base suspension permits marked body lean, as does air suspension's Comfort setting. Its Sport mode slightly sharper overall. The Advanced Parking Guidance System is a marvel for parallel parking, and works as advertised. It will also back the car into a parking-lot space, but that function takes too long to program.
Quietness

Base w/nav. sys. 460 L w/Exec. Pkg. 460 L w/Touring Pkg. 600h L Class Average
10 10 10 10 8.5

One of the quietest cars. Engine is nearly silent at idle, emits a subdued growl under aggressive acceleration. Virtually no tire, road, or wind noise.
Controls

Base w/nav. sys. 460 L w/Exec. Pkg. 460 L w/Touring Pkg. 600h L Class Average
9 9 9 9 7.4

Mostly handy and logical. Kudos to Lexus for foregoing a complicated central control system and for keeping basic audio and climate controls separate from navigation screen. Note that premium audio system's hard drive can download music files from CDs, though a USB port would make loading the hard drive a faster process. Test cars exhibited top quality materials with numerous soft-touch surfaces.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base w/nav. sys. 460 L w/Exec. Pkg. 460 L w/Touring Pkg. 600h L Class Average
9 9 9 9 8.9

Spacious for adults, though taller drivers may need more head room. Power tilt/telescope steering wheel and wide, supportive seats with multiple power adjustments make it easy to find a comfortable driving position. Fine all-around visibility.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base w/nav. sys. 460 L w/Exec. Pkg. 460 L w/Touring Pkg. 600h L Class Average
9 10 10 10 8

Adult-roomy here, too, though toe room tight with front seats fully back in standard-wheelbase model. Long-wheelbase model adds its length in rear leg room. Seat blends fine support, soft padding. Executive Seating Package combines upgraded leather with indulgent amenities such as a massaging right side seat and body-temperature sensors linked to climate control. For some passengers, Executive Seating Package's leg rest can lift occupant's feet into the seat ahead. Also note that with leg rest extended, front passenger seat cannot be occupied.
Cargo Room

Base w/nav. sys. 460 L w/Exec. Pkg. 460 L w/Touring Pkg. 600h L Class Average
5 3 3 3 5.2

Sufficient for most travel needs, but rear air conditioning trims trunk volume by a full 6.0 cu ft. Trunk lid uses hinges that further rob useful space. Good in-cabin small-item storage.
Value within Class

Base w/nav. sys. 460 L w/Exec. Pkg. 460 L w/Touring Pkg. 600h L Class Average
9 7 8 6 5.7

LS base prices start below those of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Audi A8. It is less sporty and more comfort oriented than those German rivals, but this Best Buy is outstanding in its own right in terms of power, refinement, standard features, and optional gadgets. The hybrid 600h is a technological tour-de-force, but in this price range most European competitors offer the cache of a V12 powertrain.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
